one hot toe when running/cycling

My fourth toe on my left foot becomes unbearably hot. This happens after about 7 miles of running and after 70 miles of cycling. So it happens no matter the footwear. If I remove my socks, I get relief and have tried all different brands of socks and shoes (including going up a half size). I don't blister and don't wear socks in a half Iron for the bike or the run. I do lubricate the shoes however. I have used anti blistering tape (thinking it wouldn't hurt to try). I had to pull that off as well. I wish to train for longer runs and fear my ability to not blister without socks will fade on longer runs than a half. Again just one toe. Anyone else have a problematic toe? Thanks!
