bjorn andersson in the giro
I'm looking for a point of reference here: how fast is the peloton moving in the last 15km of a stage?

If a guy like Bjorn sat in until the last 100km and then jumped off the front, got as aero as possible and hammered, I'm guessing he wouldn't be able to stay away. What if he was in all aero gear on his scott rig? Still no chance?

***This unreasonable line of thinking is coming from my thoughts that pro triathletes are accustomed to tt'ing much longer than pro roadies.

I'd say very close to zero chance.

When the front guy of the train has to only pull for 30 to 40 seconds, it's really really easy to move the train at 500 plus watts.

Are you serious? Holding off a pack of mad dog professional cyclists? Have you ever been to a road race with even say a domestic pro field? It's freaking insane. It starts off blazing and get faster by the second.

So you think they're pulling well over 30 to reel a break back in?

easily.

*if* they want to catch the break.

a much better question would be: do you think the best triathlon cyclists could finish a pro tour race in the pack?

Undoubtedly.

A strong Cat 5 field (or the remnants thereof) will often ride the last few miles of a road race in the neighborhood of 30 MPH or more.

Domestic (US) pro peletons cruise in the high 20's when there is no pressure on.

They're going 30-40mph on a flat stage.

The only time I have seen this happen was one in the early 90's (may have been 1991) when Viatchaslav Ekimov was the reigning 4000m pursuit champion (I believe from the Seoul Olympics). On a flat stage in northern france his took off with exactly 4000m to go at something like 60 kph and actually held off the pack while the sprinter teams looked at each other none of them wanting to do the work too early for the other sprinter teams. The problem is that the sprinter teams were not quite as organized as they are today with the likes of the HTC pulling at the front for Cav at such a high tempo that no one can pull around.

I think I remember one breakaway by Wino on the final stage of the 2005 TDF. And I think Cancellare pulled one of these stunts on the peloton last year or 2009. But Bjorn or any other triathlete for that matter? Sorry, but not in a hundred years.

There are very few pros who can ride off the front and stay off the front at the end of a race.

Comparing the finish of the pro championships to a sprint stage in a grand tour? Seems like there is a lot more horsepower in the chase in one of those scenarios.

Lance stayed away that day for a number of reasons, the main one being it was pissing down with rain and they were falling like flies. He chanced his arm and it payed off. Very different to holding off the pack at the finish of a grand tour.

To the poster who suggested Cav's train is something new - Olaf Ludwig, JP Van Poppel etc had fairly decent trains 20 years ago...

I love how this thread is completely scuttlebutted by the man himself nipping the question in the bud right off the bat. =)

Just for reference Chris Lieto averages 250 watts roughly at Kona which drives him to a 26mph average. Some of the leading riders in pro cycling are averaging 350-400watts an hour at points. No chance. For reference also in a TTT teams average close to 35mph for 15miles. Do you think Bjorn Andersson could outride an entire team who can drill it like that? While we as triathletes are strong, we are rarely better than single sport specialist at one discipline but well balanced across three.

250 seems a bit on the low side.
