what aero helmets are fastest for 1/2 ironman distance

I have a rudy project basic road helmet and i think rp is releasing a new aero helmet some pros used at kona that looks interesting

heard the giro aero helmets also good

what is the time savings between a road helmet and aero tt helmet?

Don’t get a Rudy aero anything, get the Giro Aerohead. Lots of threads on this topic, but if you aren’t going to test then the Giro Aerohead is a safe bet.

People typically use the same aero helmet regardless of distance.

The aerohead is a solid bet if you can’t do testing (the right helmet is highly individual). The older giro advantage2 also tests well for most people, as does the lg p-09 and POC cerebel. I got my aerohead a few years back for $125 new, on sale, so hard to beat imo.

A good aero helmet is 45-60 seconds faster than a typical road helmet over 40k...so double that for a 70.3. Aero road helmets (specialized evade, giro vanquish, etc.) are about half as good.

Lets not forget the temperature. The fastest helmet is also the one that allows the rider optimal cooling for the race conditions.

Can't go wrong with a Giro Vanquish IMO. I like using the visor, it's cool, comfortable, easy to get on and only about 30 seconds slower in testing by Giro over an Aerohead that is heavy and hot. I use the Vanquish as my every day helmet and race helmet if it is overly hot like Kona.

Like all aero helmets they are very dependant on position with this tester losing 5min over an Ironman and another gaining 2min with an Aerohead.

Depends a little on the heat.

I went through this and the answer for me was n+1.

For 70.3 and below (thus far) LG P-09 without the visor. It's fast and cool enough. In a cool enough race I might use the visor.

For full I overheat and move to my Kask Protone, lose some serious aero, but cool and comfy (love the strap).

For road and casual rides I grab my old Catlike Whisker to save wear and tear on the race lids
