dura ace 10 speed with dura ace 9 speed cassette
Quote | Reply
I only have 1 dura ace 10 speed cassette and I'm kinda sick of changing my cassette every time I use my race wheels and was wondering whether or not I could just use my dura ace 9 speed cassette on my training wheels. I understand that the 10 speed chain is narrower? From what I have read the 10 speed chain is only compatible with 10 speed parts?

We need more information to answer this question.

What type of shifters are you using? If you have 10-speed STI, you will not be able to use them with a 9-speed cassette (unless you perform some complex equipment trickery). If you are using 10-speed bar ends, you can use them with either a 10- or 9-speed cassette, but will have to use friction mode for the 9-speed cassette.

Your 10-speed chain will work for both 10- and 9-speed.

It's 10 speed dura ace throughout so yeah 10 speed STI. Why wouldn't 10 speed STI work?

Your 10-speed STI shifters have 10 positions. Each position does not line up with the individual cogs on a 9-speed cassette. That's because the spacing between the individual cassette cogs on a 10-speed are different from those on a 9-speed.

If you were lucky, you would have 2 or maybe 3 "useable" cogs when you use a 9-speed cassette with 10-speed shifters. The rest of the cogs would skip or make a lot of noise.

There is probably a better way to explain this, but I'm going to bed now.

It can be done easily, but it requires installing a J-tek shift mate or running the rear derailleur cable slightly differently and then adjusting the limit screws on the RD. This is much more time consuming than changing the 10S cassette.

Another option that would work would be to replace the spacers in the 9S cassette with some 10S spacers. The difference on the 9S spacing to the 10S spacing would only be apparent on the last couple of clustered gears, which wouldnt be that big of a deal. Again, however, you are probably just better off buying a second cassette or switching the cassette. It only takes 5 min max.

FWIW, this past week I put my Powertap 9-speed rear wheel on my road bike which has 10-spd STI because of some hamstring issues that seem to subside when I'm not riding on the aerobars. Anyways, the set-up worked suprisingly well. Obvisously the shifting wasn't spot-on and sometimes i'd have to give the levers 2 clicks to get the chain to jump one cog. I'm not going to make it a habit, but for the ocassional ride it worked just fine.

Yes, you can.

If you re-mount the gearcable on the rear derailleur. Fasten the gearcable on top of the bolt, instead of below the bolt as you would normally do and then it works with 9-speed casettes.

I did this on my winterbike with 10sp Ultegra STI and 9-speed casette -works fine.

Well I ended up putting my 9 speed dura ace cassette on my training wheels, without making any adjustments, and it seems to be going fine, aside from a tiny little bit of 'creakiness' in some of the gears.

Is this an anomaly? ;)

just throw it on...works but not perfect, i have the use of about 7 gears well. just be careful not to shift the 10th time. will result in the chain coming off

just go out and buy another 10spd cassette. it doesn't even have to be dura ace, but anything 10spd will work better than a 9spd cassette. the best thing to do would be to buy a cassette in a differest gear combo, so you'll have a choice if you travel for a race that has different terrain.

I'm with you on this. I can't see why someone would tolerate their $600+ Dura-ace STI drivetrain shifting like crap.

did you ever think of just getting a 105 or ultegra 10-speed cassette for your training set up? prices are not too bad on those, and you get perfect compatibility with all 10 cogs.
