Entry-level PowerTap + wheel build for $800? Or are there some less expensive options that will work indoors and out?

i think there is a wired powertap wheel over on the classified now for $400. thats an awesome deal

yep: here it is http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...ng=powertap;#4416016

or this one if ant+ is your thing: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...;;page=unread#unread

get em' before their gone....and if you don't wait 24hrs and another will pop up.

but if you want special race wheels, or have them already, cranked based is the way to go in my opnion. Worth the extra dollars up front to not be bound by choosing a powertap rear race wheel if you don't want to just smack a cover on the training wheel.

Used PT, Quarq or SRM wired systems are your best bets. I've got a wired Dura Ace SRM crankset running in the classifieds right now and used PT systems come up all the time. If you don't own a lot of different wheels then PT is likely the least expensive option, but crank based units are very flexible in terms of swapping wheels and only take a minute or two to swap between bikes if you have multiple bikes.

You really think a used wired SRM is more affordable than a used wired PT?

was just about to say that: indoors get a second hand kk road machine, use a garmin speed/cadence sensor with the ANT+ usb, and trainerroad. Laughing!

Indoors, you can use your trainers power vs speed curve to figure out your wattage.

Outdoors, train with roadies... if you're getting dropped, you're not putting out enough power. Hold on as long as you can. Rest. Repeat.

There... costs you nothing. :-)

Get that same setup but try to get the power tap used. I would go ANT+ instead of wired. Much more flexibility.
