you gotta put down the creds. go find the creds, otherwise their seasons (according to slowtwitch norms) didn't happen.

but... according to you, potts did not race in 2007. wouldn't he need to race in order to win the award? (dang, i was sure he raced!)

I'll vote for Potts in the Dibbens "overall" vote. "Male mid-distance pro" should go to Craig Alexander:

* 4th 70.3 World Championships (USA)
* 1st Newfoundland Ironman 70.3 (Canada)
* 1st Vineman Ironman 70.3 (USA)
* 1st Subaru Muskoka Chase Triathlon (Canada)
* 1st Florida Disney Triathlon 70.3 (USA)
* 1st St Croix Ironman 70.3 (USA)

Based on pure 70.3 results, you have to go with Alexander. IF he was fresh at Clearwater, he probably would have won. The guy hasn't lost a 70.3 in, what, two years?? That said....their results are pretty similar, Alexander had 7 victories to Pott's 6. But Potts won when they raced head to head.

I'd go with Potts cause he won the World Champs and he's a former swimmer, which I think is cool. ;-)

Potts

Ironman World Championships 70.3 Clearwater, FL: 1st : 11/10/07

Escape From Alcatraz San Francisco, CA: 1st : 6/3/07
USA Pro Championships Honolulu, HI: 1st : 5/20/07

    okay, but only 5 of those are mid-distance. the others are irrelevant, unless you want them to count toward the all-around category.

    i only see 2 mid-distance races in potts' resume for 07. maybe that's enough to win the award, but how he did in the other races matter only to the degree his golf handicap does.

    so mid-distance is based on 70.3 results only. Got it. Duh. :-)

    Crowie won Musoka, St. Croix, Aussie LC's, Disney and Vineman...with a 4th at the world champs.

    Potts won Oceanside and the World Champs.

    I changed my mind.

    Best year overall...goes to Crowie. Best 70.3 single race performance...Potts.

    Technically Clearwater is no more a "world championship" than your local half ironman...its just one race director claiming one upmanship over another so aside from depth of field, not sure if it deserves any specific weighting :-).

    Regardless, I vote for Craig Alexander.

    Considering that when both of these athletes actually competed against each other in a 70.3, Potts won, I think it should go to Potts. Potts won only two events, but when you consider the quality of the competition at Clearwater, I say Potts takes it.

    umm not trying to pick on you paul, but THE 70.3 race that contained THE best 70.3 athletes in the entire world was clearwater. itulong has lost it, and frankly every single pro in the world knows that to really be considered the world champ they'd have to go to clearwater and get past the huge long lists of awsome athletes toeing the line.

    the race course/drafting/race director discussion is irrelevant - if wildflower somehow emerged as the place to go and the long list of pros went there I'd be making the same argument....

    But the issue is whether Alexander was recovered enough from Kona to make the head-to-head with Potts at Clearwater a valid indicator of their abilities relative to one another. Potts is an animal, though, and although he's a talented short course racer, I think he's better suited to mid-distance and may head more that way in the coming years. For a swimmer, he's sure a great runner!

    Well if we are going to consider Alexander's recovery, then we should consider all of their trainning, and their complete schedules, but I believe the rules say mid distance results only, and when looking at those, Potts beat Alexander head to head.

    Definitely Craig Alexander. He was "only" 4th at 70.3 Worlds but had Kona in his legs already.

    Again, Kona should not be a consideration, for this particular category.

    And I wasn't mentioning his result there... just that he had an Ironman in his legs and was still fast enough for 4th.

    I was just thinking the same thing, didn't he win like 3 or 4 Half-IMs this year?

    Plus a few other races.

    I personally think Potts should win the award as he is the world champion, but Macca should be considered.

    Mid-distance (70.3)

    Ironman 70.3 Hawaii - 1st
    Ironman 70.3 Baja - 1st
    Silverman Half - 1st
    Monaco 70.3 - (DNF - Stolen bike)
