S-Works Trivent - Worth It?
I am in the market for an upgraded pair of triathlon/cycling shoes. Currently wear the Giro Mele. Looking at the S-Works Trivent as an option. At roughly $400, it's on the obvious high end of shoes but since 4-5 pairs of running shoes a year cost about the same (if not more) - I am considering the investment. Any thoughts on these shoes or other options to consider?

Cheers!

Arnie

Totally subject, but I LOVE them! Had a minor issue and Specialized replaced them no questions asked . . . and I had told them I'd gladly pay for a new pair.

I debated getting the S-Works Trivent shoes but they just didn't work for my foot. I then found these: http://www.specialized.com/...lon-shoes/trivent-sc and they are really nice

I have love them, but have struggled with shoes that worked with my foot and them seemed to fit the bill. My trainer partner did have issues; he kept snapping the back strap and the boa closure system knob he ripped off 2x. I have never had single issues with them though.

I double love my trivents. I also use them for road rides, only because it's the only shoe that I have. The only draw back is it does not offer as much support that you would find in a traditional road shoe, obviously. Also, the magnets are a great idea, but mine do not really work, they have seemed to have lost their magnetic power.

Great racing shoe, bad multi use shoe. But I still really like them!

I like mine but as others have said, the strap broke after not many uses.

They are comfortable, I will give them that, and certainly easy to slip on, but I have trouble getting them tight enough after the swim as I can't get a good grip on the dial. If they added a softer rubber to the dial, they'd be perfect.

I may switch to the cheaper specialized version with Velcro for next year.

I've had normal trivents before and whilst nice shoes my current s-works aren't worth the extra cost. If you already have a set of Giros I'd keep them and save the money.

Sorry I should have mentioned that the current set of Giros are a size too small. So I've been having trouble with expanding feet during longer races, which is part of the reason why I'm in the market for a new pair.

Ah in which case the Trivent Expert is when I would be heading for a new set.

S-Work trivent's are the most comfortable sockless shoes I've ever had, they happen to work really well for my foot shape.

In that regard I have been happy with them, but the whole magnet entry system is a joke as others have alluded to. The magnets don't hold very well and the rubber straps have a critical design flaw. I suspect they were only designed to hold the flap open with the magnet, but the problem is they are placed and look exactly like the strap that is used to tug the heel onto your foot in any other tri shoe. Problem is if you ever actually tug the trivent strap they will break almost immediately. They broke on my first pair right away, replaced them, then broke shortly after on the second and I just cut the dumb things off with scissors.

I've been wearing the hell out of them for years so I guess in that regard they've been worth the price (though I did get mine on clearance). I definitely would not get a second pair though, the entry system is just not any better than a more conventional one and I bet I can find a different pair that is nearly as comfortable for half the price.

The Trivent Expert has been discontinued. The shoes that replaced it is in the Trivent SC

Can you not still get a hold of the expert right now in the US? In the UK the expert looks to be at a really nice price in some shops, as a result of being discontinued, like under half the price of the SC...

Some shops still have them. Specialized.com has removed them from the website

They've moved it to the "outlet" part of their site, so anyone who wears 39 or 43 is in luck...

The Trivent SC look nice, but not a fan of the $100 mark-up from the Trivent Experts.
