Zipp Extender Stuck: What to do?
My Zipp valve extender seems stuck. I try to inflate the tire, but the pintle valve never opens.

How can I fix this?

Assuming a black one, where the native core is left in place, right?

If so, it was probably not installed in the best fashion, so unthread the extender, get the the core, make sure it's loose & free, and try again.

This can happen if the cores are not locked out good enough, and the threads not marred, it can rattle itself back shut.

Thanks so much for your reply, grosso27.

It's really tight. What do you use to unscrew it to not damage it?

The extender? It's a 3mm key.

If it's been teflon taped, as it should have been, it'll be on there pretty good.

Let a little air out, and you should be able to pump them just fine.

To keep the valve from rattling back shut, either put a bit of superglue on the tip (to keep it from screwing down) or use needle nose pliers to wrench it open a little more...breaking the top thread. There are youtubes of both methods.

Can't seem to let any air out. Used a long wooden matchstick. Nothing.

The valve is probably screwed shut. You can unscrew the extender, and then use the inside wall of it to unscrew the valve (and then reattach the extender). Alternately you can remove the tube and superglue or crimp the valve open as mentioned in a previous post.

Lave you tried sticking an old spoke or such down the extender to see if the valve is just stuck? Often the valve will stick closed and air pressure from the pump isn't enough to open it. I've got an old spoke that I use to open my valve before I pump up the tire. Good luck.

Ahh! That is no problem. I had a same problem and I scratched my head a lot to figure this out.

Step 1: I use a thin broken rubber ban and stick half through the large diameter side of a valve extender to create a grip.

Step 2: Gently put the large diameter side over the tube nipple and turn it counter clockwise to open the valve.

Step 3: After the valve is open, take out the rubber ban and gently place over the tube nipple without force and lock it up and pump.

Step 4: Good luck and win some races.

Use a different extended. Zipps extenders are a PITA. Tufu are easy to use and work great.

I agree. The tufo are the way to go, just make sure all your tyres have removable valve cores.

X 3 on the Tufo extenders. Hated the the Zipp extenders - total pain in the a**. Use 42mm tubes with removable cores and then just add the appropriate Tufo extender for the length you need. Don't forget the teflon tape.

Zipp has had a newer version of extender for a while now, they are the same as Tufo. Work great, but so do the old black ones if they're installed properly.
