Zipp 404's or Jet 4 C2?
Looking for a set of wheels tough enough to train and race on with a disc cover. Any advantage of one of these over the other? Any other suggestions?

The Jet 4 is really closer to the 303. The Jet 6 is closer to the 404. The 404 = 58mm in depth. You could also toss the Flashpoint 40 and 60 into the mix, which are closer in price range to the Jet wheels.

Any of those wheels will be durable enough to train on. The durability of the wheels is not the potential issue. It's what happens when you exceed the durability of *any* wheel. If you hit a big pothole, and you break one of the above wheels, the replacement cost - even with the good crash replacement that HED and Zipp offer - is still going to be much higher than for a cheap box section rim. There are certain circumstances that will break pretty much any wheel, and that's why people usually don't train on nicer wheels.

But you certainly can. I've trained for the past two years on a pair of 404s with a powertap. Wonderful wheels. They are actually more vertically compliant and more laterally stiff than a 32-spoke OpenPro (based on actual numbers, I just think they feel really good).

One other thing to remember is that you will need to buy long-valve tubes and travel with a valve extender (in case you need to borrow a tube) and teflon tape.

You may also want to check out either FlashPoint FP60 or SRAM S60. Both are made by Zipp, are based off of older 404 models, and have structural carbon rims, not carbon fairings. Structural carbon rims supposedly change the way a bike rides. Both are way cheaper than 404s. Somesay that the FP60s and S60s are the same wheels, rebranded, but if you look at the weights for the wheelsets, the S60 is a lot lighter than the FP60s.

Also, check out a couple of video reviews on www.testrider.com. SRAM S40 under "Road Reviews" and FP60 under "Tri Reviews." Not sur ehow objectibve the reviews are, but it's a pretty good perspective, nonetheless.

Hope this helps.

P.S. As for Rappstar's comments about valve extenders, you can always just buy tubes w/90mm. valves instead - that's what I do.

You can buy 80mm tubes, which work fine. BUT, you still want to carry a valve extender. Have you never had to borrow a tube on a particularly unlucky ride?

Good oint. It's better to have them and not need it than to really need it and not have one.
