Zipp 1080 vs 808 FC
I have to make a decision on a new rear wheel for my 2011 Felt DA. I'm trying to decide between a Zipp 1080 tubular or a Zipp 808 Firecrest tubular. Also, a full disc is not an option.

Just curious which wheel option you'd go with.

an 808 fc because it is faster then the 1080, and you can put a cover on the 808 when you aren't at kona, you can't put a cover on the 1080

How much faster is the 808 FC vs the 1080? Is it significant?

I also see the 1080 is about 100g heavier.

I recall it being real close, 808fc faster at most yaw angles but not all.

If the 1080 is a lot cheaper, might as well go with it if you don't care about the disc cover option.

I'd be interested to hear/see SuperDave chime in on this one---I had been wondering about the DA being spec'd with 1080 vs the 808FC---why did they do that/what did they base that on?

zipp marketing literature claims, on average, the 808FC pair saves 96 seconds over 40k. the 1080 pair saves 90 seconds for the same distance.

i've read that the front wheel represents about 2/3 (general terms) of the aero savings of a wheelset, so if that is true then the rear 808FC accounts for only 2 of the 6 second difference.

EDIT: Somehow I missed the bit about tubular (duh...). You're right about the ~100g difference. Only you can decide whether the minor speed gain is significant.

if it were me, i'd go with the 808FC because (a) it's a current model, (b) it weighs less than the 1080, and (c) as a full carbon wheel, it might ride a little more comfortably than the 1080 (deeper=a little more punishing). the only reason coming to mind right now for why one might not go with the 808FC over the 1080 could be that the 808FC probably costs more.

what will you ride as your front wheel?

disclosure: i've been riding the 404 carbon clinchers as everyday wheels and i have a set of 808 tubulars for races.

i'm sure the 808 and 1080 both rock and you'll probably find little difference.

I have a 1080 with cover as well. Do a forum search on Zipp 1080 Wheel Cover.

I used the 808 in the front because of the improved handling, I used the 1080 in the rear because of the imrproved handling. I think both rims' data help support their prescibed duty and aerodynamic benefit as a F&R combo.

DaveO, beautiful bike FYI. I got a chance to look at it Saturday at Bonzai Good luck either route as I am sure the time difference is negligible (at best).
