I don't know the HED3 deep, but a cycling buddy of mine has just spent major dough on the Zipp 1080 rear -- and reports (to his own shock) that the 808 is faster. This evidence is entirely anecdotal, of course.

according to the research (zipp's research) the 1080's are not only faster than hed 3's but than a disc rear in almost all applications except a lot of wind at more than 15% yaw (pertaining to the disc).
take it for what it's worth but zipp is pretty solid with their research and i haven't seen hed refute it.

Has anyone seen the Zipp 1080 claims and research validated by someone else? Not that a company would ever cherry-pick it's own findings...

Yeah, Zipp is real solid in their research. A few weeks back, I was reading the copy for the 1080 and they said it xx watts faster than the 808. Marketing had typed it up, but didn't put a figure in at that point.

agreed, cherry picking is a problem. but the problem is the expense to validate, i just don't see it happening. Either way, zipps are fast, hed's are fast, it is up to steve hed to refute zipp's claim or validate a different variation of the hed's being faster.

maybe they were validating their findings before publishing... i'm not saying they weren't, i did a lot of research on statistical manipulation and i will be the first to point out some bs but it's not fair to call someone out just for publishing research and using it to market their product.
would you rather them not wind tunnel test their products, push the bar higher, continue to innovate and make other companies follow suit?

I'm curious about how the 1080 matches up in typical conditions vs. a disk. I'd rather ride a deep wheel in a tri than a disk, but in a straight TT the disk is king.

H3D in the front and a H3 in the back. Or with a set of 1080's and a disc cover you have it all set for anything. You could probably do a 1080f 808r and a disk cover for less $.

that's the thing that got me totally dumbfounded. the 1080 is supposed to be faster than the disc in straight up conditions up to 15 yaw and 10+mph wind. i'm not physics expert and there is waaay more to aerodynamics than intuition but it doesn't make sense to me. i am still wrapping my head around dimples. but if they're comprable then it is much more realistic to ride the 1080 for weight and handling factors.
and you can't ride a disc at kona!!!

I'm right with you on all this. If the 1080 was giving up just a few seconds I'd do that over a disk. But seems a little hard to grasp how it can be faster.

just read that the study actually came from "tour magazine" windtunnel testing. FWIW
