How much do you weigh?
How hard is the wind blowing?

unless you are over 200lbs I'd try an 808 first and see how you like it.
The 1080 is really heavy compared to the 808 too.

6.1" and 180lbs
Can't control the winds, but I live in Austin TX and would guess it is pretty windy here.

I bet the guys at Austin Tricyclist would let you demo them on a windy day to help decide

No, just usually.
But the 1080 is an unusually large weight gain relative to the 808, haha
I'm sure its faster anyway but even pros like Fabian hesitate to run the 1080 up front unless its calm out

"is throwing a 1080 on the front suicide"
It's the perfect he-man compliment to a 55 x 11/21 :-)
Seriously, don't even think about it, especially since you've never used deep rims before. The best "everyman" combo for 95% of us is a rear disc with a 60mm front.

In the last TT I did in Texas – IC3/Horse Country TT series earlier this month, my 808 in the front was way too much (wind gusts of 30+mph & Hilly). I ended up using 303 in the front and still could barley control my bike. (I'm 150 5'8") so for me, 1080 in the front is totally out of the question.
But, if you alreay have backup wheel (say 404) then maybe 1080 would be good for you.

The older I get, the faster I was

I can't think of an example where I would not use the 808 front, rear disk. Can't comment on the 1080s, but in general deep wheels are nothing to fear if your bike fits right and you have good handling skills.
I've used my Zipp rear disk and 808 front in extremely windy (40+ MPH gusts at 2007 Wildflower Long Course Triathlon) conditions without significant problems. I did move around a bit in the gusts, but expect that would happen with any wheels. I'm 6'4", 205, and ride a Cervelo P3 aluminum that fits properly.

I run a 1080 on the front, with no basebar and weight less than 200lbs and have not died in the past year as some below believe will occur on running such a wheel.
But then again, I am a roadie not a triathlete :O

I say do it! I'm a 143lb cyclist and I do TTs a few times a year. I run a disc rear and 808 front and often deal with heavy wind. I far prefer my 808 in the front than my 303 on windy days. Its counter intuitive but honestly the 808 holds its line much better in wind than the 303. I generally run 40k tts in +/-57.5 mins. @ 180lbs the 1080 would be perfect + deals on 1080s are rare, deals on 303s are common. good luck.

i am 150 and run a 100mm front wheel with no issues, the ONLY ride i have ever used it for and wished i had not way toyota last summer, and we really should not have been outside at all that day (in ohio we lost most of the states power for around a week, 50-80mph winds all day).

Personally do whatever is comfortable for you.
I am 5'9 138lbs and use a 1080 set or 1080 front, disc rear for every TT and Tri that I have done.
For me it took a small amount of time to get used to deep aero wheels and I haven't had any problems in regards to handling or otherwise.
Hope this helps, I say DO IT.

I raced Sunday on P3 with a 1080/disk set up. I would describe it as a very windy race. I weigh 180. It was a little hairy a couple of times (steady wind not so bad--gusts are the issue). Obviously hard to compare, but I really don't think it was any worse than a HED3, which is the only other thing I have raced.

Run the 1080 set and recently started running the sub 9. I am about 170 lbs, and never had any problems with the set up. You get used to it and know how to "correct" with wind. Great wheels BTW.
I started with the 1080 front in August last year. At first it freaked me out so badly I simply turned around, went home and changed out front wheels; waaay too unstable.
As IM Florida came due I managed to make my peace with this wheel and I live on a windy island in the Atlantic. A five hour ride with winds gusting to 35 will do that...
The best way that I've come to describe the sensation of this front wheel is this: that it's like wrestling a drunk man; violent and unpredictable.
All that said it is a remarkably fast wheel.
