Its somewhat fascinating how many top pros there are that are American, considering how little interest there is in the sport here.
I wonder how we pull that off.

Di Luca in pink came in as 8th, 1.57 after winner Savoldelli. Zabriskie came in 3rd, 38s behind.

Reading the story it seems that Zabriskie went early while it was still raining. As it got later and the guys higher on GC went, the roads started to dry off, giving them an advantage in negotiating the course. That is most likely the only reason Salvodelli and Mazzoleni finished ahead of him.

It's not because there are more Americans than there are French/Italian/German... if this was the reason, there'd be a hell of a lot of Chinese Pro Tour Riders.

The roads dried up only for the last 5-6 riders, maybe. In all fairness when Savoldelli went off it was still wet and raining. Yet Mazzoleni did indeed benefit from his start time. I can't believe Cunego couldn't do any better than that though - maybe he had a bad day or something. I feel bad for his wife who had to hang out at a wind tunnel during her honeymoon for nothing...

Whoa...could this be the new Cannondale TT bike? I'd say "rebadged", but yet that is an SI crank.....assuming it's tied to an oversized BB. Must be Cannondale or the new Specialized (or a patent infringement!).

I would think it is indeed a Cannondale as they are testing the new SuperSix full-carbon road prototype in the Giro, so it doesn't seem too far fetched that they might have a prototype TT frame as well. It looks really nice, that's for sure. Certainly, at least by appearances, a huge step up from the 6/13 Slice frameset...

the most likely reason is probably that CSC riders are doped, and Astana guys are really, really doped.

Well... They might consider doping now because Astana has BMC!

Wait and watch the next Olympics. Their U23 female mtb'ers "came out of nowhere" last year. Just like their swimmers did. But you're right it has nothing to do with population.

SURPRISE, WE'RE HERE
A few heads turned when China's Ren Chenyuan scored a sixth place at Mont-Ste-Anne's World Cup cross-country race on June 25. But jaws dropped when Chenyuan and her Chinese national teammate Ying Liu gapped the entire women's field to finish 1-2 in the women's under-23 world championship in New Zealand, three minutes up on the next finisher. A poorly trained interpreter clumsily recounted Chenyuan's explanations of her success, despite having never raced a World Cup or world championship event before 2006. Many in the crowd seemed suspect, especially since the victories came days after the Liaoning Anshan Athletics School in Northeast China, a powerful feeder school for China's Olympic team, was caught injecting its students with banned substances.
Most of Chenyuan's words were lost in translation, but one phrase rang loudly in everyone's ear. "This is a new era for Chinese mountain biking," she said. "We are preparing for the [Beijing] Olympics."

I'd say "great minds think alike"...I'll be testing this version out tomorrow in a local TT. Field tested the CdA to be 0.235 m^2 this morning (with a borrowed 808 on the front).

How's THAT for some ST comment fodder??? :-)

If so is this the 2nd or 3rd time riders are going back to the hands in front of the face position in the past 20 years? lol

It appears Zabriski and Savoldelli are on tubies. DiLuca appears to be on clinchers (at least that disk looks like it).

There must be some conclusion to draw here, but I can't draw it.

diluca is not on clinchers. no one in the giro is on clinchers. if they pay you to ride a bike you do not ride clinchers especially not when you are leading the giro d'italia. that disc is campy ghibli labelled as a fulcum and as such is only availble in tubular form. it has an aluminum braking surface and a tensioned skin and is hollow on the inside. it is also really fast and really expensive.
