ZIPP HUBS - Question
In the zipp hub there is a tube/cylinder in the hub between the bearings, through which the axle passes.

What is its purpose?

Can it be removed?

Thanks

Ian

oh geez, DON'T TOUCH THAT!!!!! that protects the bearings from recieving any side loading which they are NOT designed to deal with. You can remove it but your bearings will fail fast and, well if you're riding when they do that that can be bad, very bad...

The fact that you are asking the question means you should simply let it alone and not touch it....

Thanks Tai, Just the sort of info I was after.

Had a feeling a company like Zipp would not have a redundant tube sitting in their hubs.

I will now re assemble with the nice new ceramic bearings which will now last longer than ever!

Thanks
Ian

Hey Bob, You've got to ask if you dont know or you will never learn anything. AKA there is no such thing as a stupid question.

My LBS did not know the answer either - same response leave it alone.

I shall now dazzle him with my new found knowledge :-)

Thanks
Ian

no problem, enjoy the ceramics! I don't think Zipp has ANY redundant features built into their rims, racing rims mean as light and as fast as can be without too much extra on there. The best one is a buddy of mine who tried to "fix" the bearing preload on the rear disk to get rid of the wobble back there. Zipp got a good laugh out of that one:)
