X/Y "Peer Review"

Hi Slowman,
I just noticed the "X/Y Peer Review" article on the main page:

http://www.slowtwitch.com/...eer_review__150.html

Just a couple of thoughts:
  • My proposal for the rewrite of 1.3.023 would most likely require another "2 wire" harp much like the one for the proposed 1.3.013 in order to account for varying BB heights. Lining up with the edge of the frame assumes a 24cm BB height.
  • Alternatively, a "3 wire" harp could be used that places the 3rd string 66 cm horizontally away from the first string. That way, one would line up the 3rd string with the center of the BB instead of the vertical member after flipping it around to check the extension. If the 2 chosen angles are the same, then the wires would all be parallel. If the extension angle is different, the angle of the 3rd wire could be changed to give the correct spacing, still using the seat wires as the limit (no matter the angle chosen for the seat).
  • The calculation and checking of the allowable extension would be pretty easy once an angle is chosen. For the example of an angle of 78 degrees and an offset of 66cm, the horizontal extension dimension as measured from the BB can be figured out from the difference in the heights of the seat and the BB off of the ground.
    • Extension = 0.213 x (SH - BB) + 66cm, where SH is the vertical seat height measured off the ground, and BB is the vertical BB height measured off the ground.
Good luck in your "pushing" of this forward :-)

You could also post this as a "comment" on the article itself. ("comment on this article" link)

I have no idea. After all, that all depends on what angle and offset the "powers that be" decide to use. The numbers in the proposal are just examples.

But, using the the example 78 degree angle and 66cm offset, and the fact that your vertical seat height dimension from the BB is 73.7cm, the equation I listed above gets you:

Extension = (.213 x 73.7cm) + 66cm = 15.7cm + 66cm = 81.7cm

Which means that with those example values, your 840mm reach would be only 23mm long. If that was the case, you might want to look at angling your hands up slightly ;-)

thanks tom...

or the other option is cut the bars short and hold the shifters which is not technically legal, but kind of a grey area (all the cool kids are doing it)...

The da is almost built... just need some more black nokon pearls...

That's funny, I've almost finished up my "new" TT rig for 2008...I'm building up my old 1986 Bianchi Sport SX frameset to be my "TT position simulator". It'll even have an old-skewl Scott clip-on aerobar complete with 8speed GripShifts ;-)

It's kind of the Yin to your DA's Yang ;-)

Not at all... That's just what I did last season with the trek ttt...

You remember, with the bar hot swap setup and ergostem.

Maybe a little nicer than yours, but what I had laying around...

The Soloist will still get pressed into duty for the "big" TTs (district TT, etc.) :-)

Hey Jordan,
I posted my thoughts as a "comment" in the article...but it never showed up there. Just thought I'd point that out in case there was some sort of glitch that needed to be worked out.

you saw my post in another thread about the soloist and p2c? although the trace I was looking at during the preso was the carbon soloist, no telling how the al soloist did. I bet it was there, but I don't have the spreadsheet/ppt to look it up...

;)

No...I didn't. But, I'd expect the Aluminum Soloist to perform similarly to a P2K. Do you recall where that stood?

Thanks. Comments need to be validated to prevent spam, and I'm a bit backlogged on them. Stupid "get a credit card spammers..."

Yeah, but its kinda annoying. I had to make my tri bike legal for Provincials this year and they actually checked. I'm lucky in that at 6'6" I can get quite steep and legal at the same time. I did have to take a hacksaw to the seat and cut off a couple of centimetres but the annoying part was how short I had to cut my extensions to get to the 80cm when I had been running a tad over 90. My hands pretty much sat on the shifters most of the time but with the cut seat and tall saddle I could get steeper than anyone else and in that way I had an advantage. I also rose on the rivet so to speak and that steepens it up a little as well but is only good for TTs for someone my size.
