Work travel to Las Vegas 4 weeks before season A race: training tips
Quote | Reply
Slowtwitchers,
Through work I am going from Europe to a conference in LV about 4 weeks before my season A race. Other than obvious things to prevent a total collapse of my form( staying away from 2nd hand smoking, binge drinking and losing money at casinos so that I have to sell my bike and wheels) I am looking for some training tips.

There will be programs most of the day, and dinners in the evening, so training will have to be in the morning. From what i see the hotel pool @Luxor does not open until 9am :(

As i am sure someone else must have been there on work related travel I am looking for tips on where to swim in the morning (close to Luxor) and running routes and anything else helpful

Thanks
Andreas

UNLV has a pool and is close to the strip. . Most hotels have decent gyms if you want to spin. Run from the strip out towards the airport if you don’t like treadmills.

Lost of smoke free gambling. Liquor is expensive unless you are gambling.

Drop in swim at UNLV campus is what I’ve done. It’s not too far from the strip. If I have a run workout I do it on treadmill but if it’s just a. Easy run I’ll run the strip towards old downtown. Once you get about a mile or so down the strip it’s regular sidewalk running and sometimes there are some very intersting sights. I don’t worry about riding.

If you have access to a car, the Henderson Multigenerational Facility is another great pool to swim at. Along similar lines, if you're intending to rent a bike, the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop is a must do.

I travel a good bit and was away from home a bunch before my A race this year. Spin classes are your best friend. Looks like there are a few indoor cycling studio options out there. Great interval workout and won't destroy your form since most places give you SPD shoes. If you really want your butt kicked, book two classes back to back. I suppose hotel gym bikes are better than not riding a bike at all, but not by much. Running is onviously a no brainer. Run outdoors or indoors on a treadmill if you can't find a good route. Pool wise it looks like the Desert Breeze Aquatic facility has a bunch onf 25yd lanes, opens at 5:30am, and charges $3 per visit. Probably some other similar pools out there but this was the first one that came up in my search. Good luck!

No car, but UNLV looks great, so will target to run to and from the UNLV pool 2 days, and hit the gym for some spinn cycling and running along the strip the other days.

Thanks for the help so far!

Do not plan to run on the strip or near the luxor- the treadmill is the better option (and i avoid treadmills if at all possible). If you can make it out to red rocks for a trail run thats a great side trip but something that won't happen early am before meetings. Unfortunately i don't think the luxor pool is swimmable for laps.

Getting in late here, but yes to the UNLV pool. I think it's like $5 to drop in (was last time i was there), and like others have said, nearly all hotels have top notch gyms.

100% avoid running on the strip, unless you want to be dodging tourists, idiots dressed like bootleg Disney characters, and stopping every few hundred yards to take a escalator up over some bridge overpass. If you much prefer running outdoors as opposed to a treadmill and want that Strava map, go run up and down Koval Ln one block East of the Strip.

As tempting as Vegas may be, it's pretty easy to just call it a night early and eat pretty well/healthy with all the different options on the strip

Escalators - yes, might be an issue further north on the strip. But assuming a 6am run start, or even earlier, tourists are not a problem. If you do not like the heat, you have to get out very early anyway...

Totally practical tip. If you want coffee before your morning workout, pack a coffee cup, some tolerable instant coffee (or a pour over), and something like this: immersion heater. Vegas hotels don't have in-room coffee because they want you out in the lobby to gamble on your way to the coffee shop. Maybe it's just me, but I find the overpowering smell of cigarette smoke at 5:00 AM is just not a good way to start the day.

have had some of my best training weeks (for a conference week) during conferences in vegas..

  • Bellagio has a good 25yard-ish pool - empty when it is opened
  • Running in Vegas is awesome in the morning - run towards the convention center (not on the strip unless you go towards the MGM away from the Bellagio, it is annoying with the overpasses)
  • Bellagio gym is great - has a bunch of bikes - if you have time you can rent a bike and go to Red Rocks (or something like that)

Smoking / drinking - keep it in control but enjoy yourself - you have 4 weeks - it will not impact you either way.

Closing out this thread now that the trip is over.

In short:
  • Didn´t manage to hit the UNLV pool as meetings started to early, with long lines.
  • Had 1 run outside, but due to scorching heat it was not fast, but very scenic .Nice to see Las Vegas early in the morning with only the last pub crawlers still out
  • Had several nice HIIT runs inside in the Luxor gym overlooking the pool area. Tip for other people travelling to Vegas, there is limited to no chance to get training in after work/dinner as at least the gym where i stayed closed already a 7pm .guess they want you out on the asino floor and not in the gym in the evenings.... in 14 years with international business travel this is the first time i have been at a hotel with a gym that closes this early. The silver lining is that i set a new PB for 5k on a threadmill in the 20 minutes i had before they closed ::D

Thanks for all the tips!

Also.... early morning running on the strip (especially on weekends) can be a lot of fun because it coincides with the walk-of-shame. You will see some *interesting* sights

I do the same thing as them, just slower
