Thisw will start another war between the DeBoom lovers and haters but judging by the times you posted, Tim would have came in 7th in 1996. Obviously LVL 's time is more impressive because it was faster.

But LVL only won by 2 minutes...

And I'm not a die hard Deboom fan, but he crushed everyone in 2001. Measuring an Ironman win by overall time alone is a bit unfair and unrealistic.

Two comments/questions:

Wasn't the course change in 2001? Did that affect the times? How?

Wasn't 2001 one of the windiest IM's? Was 1996 windy?

The fact that Deboom won by 15 minutes and beat Thomas by more than 15 minutes in 2001, whereas LVL only beat Thomas by 1.5 minutes, speaks volumes to me about Debooms achievement. In mind, the times relative to other competitors is much more relevant than comparing year to year, especially when you have the same person to compare to in both years. Thomas seems pretty darn consistent, making him a good mark.

Yeah, but he beat DeBoom by 27 minutes. Tim just picked a much slower race.

I'm outta here. No more posts from me about how great/not great DeBoom is. Let's see how well he does this year.

You just can't compare the races unless the conditions were substantially similar. No doubt, Luc's win was impressive. IMHO, so was DeBoom's, but for different reasons.

I'm done with this subject.

Both would have won by even more if not for time spent in the sin bin for penalties. Deboom for drafting and LVL for blocking. W/O LVL's penalty he's at 8:01! So close.

You can't compare these as weather is too important a factor in Kona.

That said, LVL's victory is probably the most impressive. 2:41 marathon. Sorry, but weather or no that is damn quick.

Look at the bike splits. In 1996 Luc's bike was 6min slower than Hellriegel. In 2001 Tim's bike was 1min slower than Hellriegel while Larsen blew them all apart. Larsen smoked the competition in 2001 on the bike and his time is STILL 3min slower than LVL in 96. This is difinitive evidence that the course in 2001 was harder than 1996. Tim smoked the competition in 2001. What more can we ask of him? Let's compare apples to apples and not worry about which champion was better. 10/18/03 will be a great day.

My opinions

1) I don't think Deboom should be characterized as not pushing it on the bike - the results don't bear that myth out.

2) The weather is why the times are slower or faster in any one year vs. another. 1996 was an incredibly favorable weather year - LVL broke the overall record & Hellreigel set the bike record. I think Deboom's win in 2001 is more impressive than LVL's in 1996

3) LVL can run - his times are great because of his run. NOT because of the myth he takes it to everyone in all 3 legs.

4) Larsen is the only player out there with the potential to win the race on the bike. He can put 15 to 20 minutes into the field and still run after that hard of an effort. That might be enough to hold off the runners.

5) Hellreigel is awesome over these years and he won it in 1997.

LVL's swim times are rather solid. To say he wins b/c of his run is a bit unfair. He has to be near the top guys to run them down. If he is 30min back and runs a 2:35 it won't matter unless everybody tries to run 3h+.
