Yeah about halfway to the turnaround on the first lap. I assumed somebody was in trouble. Everyone was trying to get the attention of an official. Very surprised there was no mention of it here when checking in this morning. Heard ppl questioning it later in the race but nobody that I ran into seemed to have any idea either.

My bet - some ignorant fuck entered a race they had no reasonable reason to enter. Then, they got in the swim, fucked up and ruined some other folks day.

What if the Hokey Pokey is what it is all about?

Or someone had a heart attack, blood clot, kicked in the chin and went unconscious, cramp, any number of things and went under.

One of my athletes stopped to help the guy, and so did several other athletes. He went on to feel great about his swim, and the rest of his day because he helped someone in distress.

Tone it down. The OP was asking a serious question and your snarky comments are not needed.

May I remind you? You're not perfect.

Except you don't really know anything about what happened or this person.

Basically it's just some bullshit that you spout off...

I have been in that swim ten times - NO reason someone should freak out. Very good visibility, very clear course (there are lane lines for gods sake). So, someone has an issue - that issue was there before they got in the water. Could it be medical? Sure - pass. But, far too many folks enter races they have no business entering. Life goals are cool and all - but folks need to do that on their own time. Not the time of the guy who had to help him.

You know what? I dont give a fuck what happend. I have been in that swim since 99 - prepare or dont. There are far far too many idiots who simply do not belong on the course, let alone in the swim. This time I know exactly what i am talking about - I have done that swim time after time. It aint that hard. If someone had an issue - they ruined the day of other folks for their own selfish reasons. They should have been a bit more prepared - and there is no argument for that.

I think they should offer a duathlon there the same day for those who don't like to swim.

Chip - I was pulled from the water by the guards at IMAZ on my way to a sub hour swim (actually swam sub hour the next IMAZ) due to an unforeseen medical issue. Was I an ignorant fuck? I gotta say, you often have a valid point, but the douche bag delivery always gets in the way.

Why did you get pulled from a swim?

And yes - delivery is everything - but, the point get across.

Chip may not be eloquent, but there is at least some truth to the fact that people who aren't prepared in the least enter IM races. Swimming 2.5 miles and comfort in open water should be a prereq to doing an IM.

Others are right, it could be something unforeseeable but lets not forget the picture of the person swimming with a foam noodle that surfaced last year.
