Wetsuit Fit
Ok so gearing up for Galveston I have two wet suit's, one sleeveless and one sleeved. I have swam in both multiple times but have a couple questions for the Slowtwich brain trust.

While wearing my Long sleeved suit last year at Galveston I felt extremely restricted. Restricted to the point that I felt like my suit was fighting against my arms during each stroke. I put this suit on last night and it felt as if I had to force my arms all the way down. I have not raced in this or swam in it since, I have wet it to keep stretch but that's all.

The sleeveless suit that I have is not near as restrictive with a little excess in the waist and has much more freedom of mobility than the sleeved. It also however allows more water into the suit. I have never raced in this suit but have swam several times in a pool in it.

So in hopes of not getting to many smart a#% answers which is my better suit? I am not a fast swimmer (hoping for 45min) so time on the swim is not a huge concern. My concern is lack of mobility versus to much water getting in the suit. Thoughts?

I went through this recently and will be doing Galveston also. I've been using a sleeveless wetsuit and am very comfortable in it, but I bought a Desoto T1 full sleeve wetsuit recently with the hope of buying some time. I tried the T1 in open water and I didn't like the full sleeve at all, for the reasons you mentioned. I felt tired after 800 yards, my stroke was affected, and I was slower.

The conventional wisdom is that a sleeved wetsuit is faster than sleeveless BUT it also has to fit you correctly and you have to get used to it. Look at the recent thread on here about sleeved vs sleeveless. Maybe my Desoto doesn't fit, although I think it does, and/or I'm just not used to a full sleeve wetsuit, which is the more likely issue.

Either way, I'm going with what I'm used to and comfortable with for Galveston, which is the sleeveless. I'll test out the T1 afterwards to see if it's a keeper, since Deosoto has a 30 day return policy. Hope this helps.

Didn't you guys see Dan's article that came up as a result of that big recent thread? Maybe it's time to consider a different wetsuit that fits properly.

Me, I only own a sleeveless because I was cheap and now have taken a break from Tri's so don't need a new wetsuit. But I am very interested in the T1 for proper fit when I eventually get back into it.

I had not seen that article but thank you for sharing it with me. I am going to look into that suit as well, but for this race I think I'm going to have to go with the sleeveless, if nothing else just for piece of mind.

I too had this issue and finally bit the bullet and went full sleeve last year in all races when legal and never looked back.

The key to not have it pull on your arms is to cinch that sucker up from ankles to neck. Work it slowly up inch by inch until it's SNUG on the crotch, even with arms down. That gave mine enough flexibility to raise and lower arms and not feel like the suit was fighting me.

BUT, if you're suit is too small, this might not help.
