On the ferry back from a tour of Alcatraz Island I noticed Greg Welch and pointed him out to my (then) girlfriend. I said "He is one of the best pros and also a fun-loving guy from what I've seen and read about him". There was some confusion about where we should swim to on race day. My girlfriend said "Why don't we ask him?" I was reluctant since people probably bug the guy all the time for photos, etc. She asked him where to sight during the swim and, I have to tell you, he was the nicest guy. He gave us a ton of information that was very useful and reassuring since I had never done Alcatraz. Greg Welch is a pro and a great guy.
