Water temps in Cleveland?
Just wondering what the water temp is at the swim venue for Nationals. Not that it matters to me, I'm good with or without a wetsuit, just curious.

This measurement site is at the 'crib' which is a water intake structure a few miles offshore of the beach where the swim will take place. I would expect the water at Edgewater beach to be warmer. I've spent a lot of time sailing/coaching there.

There is also this map: https://ny.water.usgs.gov/maps/nowcast/ Not sure where they are taking the measurement.

The map shows the temp at Edgewater Park at 72.3 which lines up with the 72 degrees that was posted to the event FB page. Reportedly taken using USAT protocols.

Not sure why the temp at the crib would be almost 5 degrees higher, like you I would expect the opposite. If you look at the data for the crib it did go up 2 degrees from the morning likely due to the sunlight at the 1m depth.

I did a lot of sailing there too, back in the 80s!

FB post from USAT has water temp at 76 this am. The last post almost matched the reported temp here https://ny.water.usgs.gov/maps/nowcast/
exactly. Now off by 1.7 degrees.

I can only hope there is a warm front or something that stalls up there. If not, I will be giving up some time to the folks in suits.

Not that its here nor there, but why is the wetsuit temp limit set so high?

We have opposing wishes in this department. I already give up a lot of time in the swim, just less in a wetsuit.

I don't think the cutoff is too high, irrespective of my desire to swim in wetsuit to minimize the time lost. I did a race last year that was over the limit but by the time we started my wave it was almost 30 minutes after warm-ups. The water was cold running in (beach start) and I hyperventilated. I really struggled to get my breathing under control for the first 5 minutes or so. That doesn't happen in a wetsuit except maybe in the low 60s.

I do all my OWS training after mid-June or so without a wetsuit even when some training partners were still wearing theirs today. Maybe its just me, I find the pool cold at first too.

oh, I'll be giving up time in the swim irregardless. Its just I don't have a wetsuit and assume that will autmatically make my competition even more fast.

I haven't experienced a real cold swim yet (but I also haven't done that many races). The water temp (as it is now) feels normal to me and probably even down to 74-75. I have experienced the opposite extreme though where even in a speedo I am overheating on the swim.

Talk to ROKA the day before the race. They are letting people try stuff out for practice swims.

I've only been too hot a few times. Both in pools! Once the thermostat was broken so the heater kept cranking. I think it was high 80s. We took breaks getting out of the pool to cool down.

Ive done about 20 or so tris over the past several years in Lake Erie on or around where Nats is and only once was it not wetsuit legal.

Odds are high it will be wetsuit legal but you never know I guess...

I did Cleveland Tri once when it was not wetsuit Legal. Maybe 2008 or so? I remember the water was choppy and it was a tough swim that year.

USAT's email from today reports 76 degrees. The two links up above each have Edgewater at 77.7 degrees. I think it'll be close, but with the rain in the forecast this week that should keep it under 78.

At the practice swim today, I swam without wetsuit in prep for not having tomorrow. From a temperature perspective I enjoyed not having it, from a wave perspective I wish I had it.
