Coming out of nowhere this morning, Wahoo Fitness has announced the acquisition of Speedplay – the makers of cycling pedals. The acquisition marks the second company that Wahoo has acquired this year, following The Sufferfest a bit earlier in the year. The move will see Wahoo take ownership of the entire Speedplay business, which is based in San Diego, CA. The purchase also includes 24 patents related to the pedals, including numerous non-road pedal based patents including cross and mountain pedals.

Wow. As far as acquisitions go, unless Wahoo wants to get into power pedals, I'll be pretty curious to see if this actually changes anything. Also, it means I might forgive Speedplay for not responding to multiple emails, I guess they were busy :P

I think this definitely leads to a Speedplay power meter.

It didn't 'come out of nowhere' as it was copied verbatim from DCR.

When you say that "SRAM makes no pedal" is Powertap (pedals) not under the SRAM umbrella yet? Or are we talking about non-power meter, non-flat pedals?

Aside from not having the money to buy it, if they were somehow able to make a no compromises Speedplay zero aero power meter then there would finally be an acceptable way to run an aero crank like Vision's and still have power in a convenient spot. Would be an awesome setup.

of course they make a pedal now. by virtue of that acquisition. but speedplay has been SRAM's great white whale for decades. just could never land it. and that's just my guess. maybe SRAM was never interested in speedplay but i'd be shocked x10 if that was the case. what you'd want if you're SRAM is a pedal that can flow up and down the price range like the rest of their components, and like shimano has.

if you'd have announced at the beginning of the year: SRAM and Wahoo are going to make acquisitions, and the acquired brands are Powertap and Speedplay, who'da thunk it would go this way?

So, where's the why in this? My only sense is they think they can downsize enough components to fit into a standard speedplay (not the aero), to make a power meter?

Just seems like it doesn't fit their core business as a tech company. Maybe it does, but I'd like to see those quotes rather than the ones they provided. So, I've got the same questions you ended the article with: why?

The real win would be putting the power meter in the cleat and leaving the pedals as is.

Maybe this is part of their milestone plan to get ahead of the game for e-cycling and gaming future. Zwift and other online races aren't going anywhere, and there's been the constant discussion on preventing e-doping and importantly, potentially having an industry standard for power measurement.

So once they release a speedplay standard power meter pedal, they can now be the major player in online cycling with an approved industry package/architecture. To race, you can buy Wahoo's own bike, or you can buy their smart trainer, or you can buy their power pedals but either option will qualify you to compete online.

Not sure how that would be done w/o making the cleat bigger and thus negating some of the low profile, aero benefits.

I'd totally jump all over a Speedplay power meter and ditch my two crank-based ones, as long as it was as reliable as most other power meters and reasonably priced.

I appreciate that behind the scenes take. Those aren't thing I would have thought about (or guessed at) earlier this year. They are interesting to think of the possibilities though. Thank you (and BryanD) for the continued coverage.

I just can't wait for Wahoo to bring Speedplay's website into the 21st century... That'll be the real win here.

It looks like a play to become more of the entire cycling ecosystem. It might also be scooping up companies that are "cheap" for acquisition.

It seems like Wahoo is chipping away at Garmin - trying to overtake Garmin in cycling. Head unit, trainers, online-training program, pedals, indoor bike - they're building a nice kingdom.

Now watch SRAM gobble up Wahoo and add trainers, computers, and pedals to their line.

If they could build it in the adapter plate and not the mechanical part of the cleat that would be sweet.

This is precisely what Brim Brothers were doing but they weren't able to overcome some accuracy problems in the end and the project died. They did ship some first run units but they weren't up to spec. It was a Speedplay cleat based power meter called Zone something or other. Maybe Wahoo will pick up where they left off, maybe they'll do their own thing, maybe they'll do nothing of the sort.

Seems like a good deal all around I suppose, how much did they pay? I want to know how rich old Richard is now, he certainly has been grabbing for that brass ring since the 70's. Dude has more inventions that just about any single person in cycling, that have stuck that is..

I think it will be a power clete of some kind, unless miniturazation has caught up with their little profile pedal..I will buy it, always thought this is the ultimate way to go for power, easily changed from bike to bike, freeing up the designs on all the other areas where it is now currently sitting..Congratulations Richard!!!

IQSquare - once they get their power pedal (based on Look pedal) - might be SRAM's target down the road.

I hope they can convince more shoe makers to make Speedplay compliant soles.
Thankfully Sidi is still doing this.

With the release of the walkable/aero cleats Speedplay is clearly the best pedal system on the market. When I see my riding companions fumbling to clip in on one sided pedals I just shake my head.

No interest in a power meter, but if they made one cheap enough inside Speedplay pedals I'd consider it.

Mostly agree. But I’d also like to see some kind of security feature so that some bandit with a pedal wrench can’t just run off with my power meter.
