Useful maps for bike route planning
I'm posting to share and to also inquire on what maps members have used when planning a ride through unknown country. I used this map from my DOT and I found it very useful for picking the roads I wanted to ride. I'm curious if other states provide this resource?

I used the Garmin Connect Course creator to map the roads I selected into a course that I could follow using my 1030.

My n+1 experience was that those two resources worked well together and it got me wondering if there were other/better resources that bikers used to plot courses.

A couple of things that the maps didn't work well for was road closures due to flooding and bridge repairs. I found that trying to use your phone in the middle of no where to reroute your course is nearly impossible with poor cell reception. The only thing I can think of to address that is paper maps.

If you bumble around on Garmin Connect long enough, there is a heatmap that shows you how popular each road is with cyclists.

I use "Ride with GPS" to plot a route and then transfer it to my Garmin 1030.Works very well for bike tours and training routes.

Ditto above on Garmin Connect's heat maps. Those work great for both running and cycling route planning. Also, Strava routes are a fantastic resource. However, those are subscription-only now.

I checked Strava for the route I was planning. There was no activity on much of the route due to the rural/country setting. I was most interested in low traffic roads which the DOT maps worked well and also road conditions which I didn't find any information for.
