let's try that again with image in the post.... what puzzles me is that it looks like the GPS didn't get signal at all until well over halfway into the loop. So why does it still show a distance of over a mile, when the whole loop is just a mile?

Until the GPS locks on, it'll use the accelerometer in your watch like a foot pod, to estimate distance...just like it would on a treadmill.
I think the takeaway is: "wow, the accelerometer is within about 10% accuracy"

My previous tech was a 310xt, so I wasn't thinking about that aspect. If there was no GPS, it showed nothing happening. That's what confused me. Since it's new to me, it's still assuming I run faster than I do, but yeah, for a guess it wasn't all that bad I suppose.
