Triathlon bike for a 10 year old
Both of my kids are in a triathlon team here in Mexico. I am going to buy each of them a bike for their birthday next month. I have already decided on a Cervelo One 650/48cm for my 12 year old son but I am having a hard time finding something for my soon to be 10 years old son.

I am not a cyclist so I will have to rely on your advise to buy this second smaller bike.

Thanks beforehand for your advise.

Sorry - I hadn't realized that you're new here and therefore wouldn't get the joke (Francois is an Elite athlete who although taller than I, gets a LOT of midget jokes).

Seriously however, I'd take a good look at Argon18 (http://www.argon18bike.com). They have a line of kid's road bikes in 2 different wheel sizes (R2/D2 - 650/24") that would likely be a good match for your son.

It sort of depends on how big or small your 10-year old is. My 7-year old son is relatively long-legged and about as tall as a 10-year old and rides a size 40 Cannondale Feminine (similar to a size 43 Trek WSD) with 650 wheels. You can also look at the Javelin Dolce, the Argon R2 and the smallest Fuji in 650 wheel bikes. In 24" wheel bikes the Trek KDR 1000, the Felt 24, the Argon D2 and of course the Pinarello, Bianchi, Peugeot and Colnago 24" bikes.

If he's really small you can put him on a little mountain bike with slicks. That what I did with my kids when they started.

If you have any more questions about small bikes or parts, don't hesitate to PM or email me... I have LOT'S of experience in that area!

Check out the Titanflex kids tri bike. I checked one out at the Ironkids race in Sacramento this year and it looked good. It's totally adjustable so you can adjust as your kid grows.

Oops... forgot about that one... yes, good concept to have a bike that grows with the kid!

You have all been very helpful. I found in this post more than in the past two weeks.

Would the Wrench Science Sizing system work on kids?

Under this system my oldest son is:

42 cm handlebar width center-to-center

157.6 cm overall reach center-to-center

48 cm center-to-top (47 cm center-to-center)

63.58 cm saddle height

I will measure my youngest son soon.

Thanks again for your expert advise.

I wouldn't rely on any "system" for fitting kids because they're not proportioned like adults. I don't know where you live in Mexico, but as a start I would try to find a Trek or Cannondale dealer and try the small bikes I mentioned. Another one I forgot was the Specialized Dolce in the smallest size (43, 45?) but it has 700c wheels and the geometry just doesn't look right to me. Remember also that you can get stems as short as 50mm and that will help on some frames if the reach is a little long with the typial 80mm stem. You can also email the manufacturers that I mentioned and give them your son's dimensions and ask if the bike will fit. You'll be surprised... they're usually pretty informative. I can tell you that at the most recent IronKids races I saw a lot of the little Felt and Trek mini-road bikes ridden by the 10 and unders.

Personally I like the little Cannondale. To give you an idea, here's a picture of my very petite (then) 9-year old daughter on the 40cm R3000 Feminine... as you can see it has a short-ish slightly sloping top tube, 76 degree seat angle and appropriately-small-sized components. It's also extremely light.

As many of y'all know, my kids have won several national championships in triathlon and now mountain biking so they (and I) sort of have the bike thing down. Regarding bike setup... do NOT put any sort of aero clip-on bars on a kid's bike, and absolutely no cowhorn aerobars! Their races are relatively short and technical (i.e. lots of turns), and kids' reaction times and bike-handling skills are not what adults' are so they need to be riding on drop bars where control and access to the brakes is better. My philosophy on kids bikes is keep it simple. If you look carefully you'll notice that her bike has no front derailleur and only one chainring. We just switch out front chainrings depending on the course, BMX style.

Those wheels are the only non-HED wheels we have... my Lew Sydneys... 1056 grams! It was a race with a lot of climbs so I gave her the "crazy lights" as we call them. The cranks are Murray adjustable carbon cranks which Mr. Graham Murray in South Africa generously made specially for my daughter because I couldn't find cranks short enough. They are incredible and will be the only crankset she will ever need because they range from 155mm to 175mm and as she grows we just adjust the cranks out further to make them longer.

(9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4... ;-)

IronDad... Congratulations on your kids achievements!

I fully agree with you regarding buying our kids the best equipment we can afford.

What you said about the bars is a very important doubt I had.

Thanks to all for your expert comments

In Italy they don't allow their young athletes on a road bike until they are 14. It's all mountain biking.

Then on the other side of the road you have IronDad, who's kids have more equipment than a lot of adults =P

oooh I love these types of threads. It's been a long time we've had an argument. Here's I'll start:

You said she was 9 in that picture, right? What justification could you possibly have for a 9 yo to ride a C'dale R3000 if her race distance calls for a 5k bike (that's what the Ironkids site says)?? If it was a bike she was going to ride for a few years, sure go ahead, but she's 9, just 2-3 years shy from her growth spurt. What 2000-3000 dollar bike does she ride now?

edit: and I mean no disrespect to you or your girl.

edit2: and don't call me young man

It is unfortunate that you have chosen to be disrespectful and criticize and judge me and my children again. I'm not sure what a 14 year old boy is doing on a forum used primarily by men in their 30's and 40's instead of doing something on or off the Internet with kids his own age. Regardless, I will not engage you in this. You are free to debate this issue young man, but it will be without me.

First off I'm going to be 16 in less than a month.

How is this disrespectful? I didn't say anything bad about your or your kids. I voiced my opinion on a subject. If you feel that's going into your privacy, fine, don't reply. That's your decision.
