From the pictures looks like a huge gas truck of some kind? Anyway really devastating, and her husband is still out racing oblivious to what happened, that is going to be one tough announcement once they find him...

I race with multiple family members at almost every race, including my wife. This is an absolute nightmare.

Too old to go pro but doing it anyway

This one is tough. That poor guy on the course has no idea. I couldn't imagine that as me and my wife do Tri's together, as well.

So from the news, did she get hit immediately out of transition? There had to be tons of signs, cones and stuff at that part of the race.

If it was on 23 then there was definite separation with cones every 30 meters or so. Best to let this one play out. Very sorry for the family.

Way early of course but a report is that she was outside the coned off area.

Totally devastating. I cannot even imagine.

Article has been updated. Says she "was reportedly struck by a commercial tractor-trailer just before 9 a.m. while riding her bike northbound in the right lane on U.S. 23 near Troutman Road", "traveled outside the safety zone that had been established for people participating in the event", and "was struck in the left-hand lane."

And the truck driver. Can not imagine having that on my conscience.

Did I read that right? It reads like she/triathlete was in the wrong lane. Wonder how that happened.

Indoor Triathlete - I thought I was right, until I realized I was wrong.

Yeah, read it correctly. Without knowing the exact spot it's tough to say and even then it'd be speculation, which isn't appropriate. I suspect we'll never actually know. Awful for all involved.

Easy - hit a pot-hole/bad section of road, lose control, crash and slide across the road.

And in the pictures, the road was FAR from pristine.

Road was smooth concrete at that point. Almost no pothole. Actually the whole course was in really pretty good shape compared to many other races I’ve done

Or that early into the bike... A possible medical event stemming from the swim?

We've all done enough triathlons to know people cross outside the cones all the time. Ironman Steelhead is an epidemic of people riding outside the cones and across the yellow. I believe it's auto DQ if caught. Not saying she did it on purpose but it wouldn't surprise me. Either way, very sad.

Per FB group she hit slid on some sand/gravel and overcorrected as she tried to prevent crashing causing her to swerve into traffic.

I saw the immediate aftermath: must have been five minutes after it happened. It was truly awful, and I desperately wish I could unsee it.

Not sure why that would make you sick to your stomach.

Given the location and the type of vehicle (large and loud), it would seem that this was something beyond her control like a medical event or road problem, versus her purposely going outside the cones.

I don't really recall gravel... That road was swept about as good as possible.

It made me sick thinking about being out on a course and having your wife dead on the side of the road right behind you

Yep, like I stated earlier in the thread how horrible that was a heart wrenching aspect of this incident as my wife and I do Tri's together. We've been sad for the family all day.
