Tri bike lights
I've decided (based on several accidents that I've heard and read about) that I'm going to run lights on all of my rides. However, base bars and aero bars aren't conducive to most light mounts. The same is true for an aero seat post (Blue Triad). Does anyone have a light that they use that is pretty easy to mount on either base bars or underneath the aero bars.

For a rear light, is there any sort of mounting system that attaches to the seat rails (similar mounting to some of the rear water bottle holders)?

I used to have two Nite Rider Enduros mounted to the under side of my aero bars. Nite Rider makes a universal mount that made that a fairly easy set up. I've since moved on to a TriNewt. I use zip ties to mount it to a Profile Design aero drink mounting bracket. Works like a charm.

Head Lamp - Use a helmet-mounted headlamp. Many choices - but don't scrimp. I like this one, it is lightweight and easily mounted - http://www.cygolite.com/...ilion/milion200.html

Brighter (but heavier) - http://www.niterider.com/prod_trinewt.shtml

Tail Light - Planet Bike SuperFlash mounted on standard under-saddle bag - http://ecom1.planetbike.com/3034.html

I'm waiting to get one of these delivered this week as a tail light: http://fibreflare.com. I'll let you know how it performs later this week.

For a front light, I've attached a piece of timber dowel to the end of the aero bars and mounted a standard light on it. It's important to get the light our near the end of the aero bars so the light's not blocked.

Last fall/winter/spring, when I was riding more in the evening/dusk hours, in addition to a main front/rear light, I used the small, velcro planet bike spok lights on for extra visibility on training rides.

http://ecom1.planetbike.com/3043.html

They are surprisingly bright, and I strapped the clear/white ones on either side of the fork, and the red/tail ones on both of the seat stays. After a few too many close calls, and getting hit by an SUV last season, i decided I didn't care if I looked like a mobile Christmas tree :).

Thanks for the ideas! I already have a few of the planet bike superflash lights, but I'm not how to mount them on the back of my bike. Maybe I'll try to figure out a mounting system this weekend.

I think I'm going to give this one a try, in addition to my current bar light and tail light on the seat-stays. A friend has this set-up and it's nicely packaged and seems high quality.

That looks like a good setup - the price seems a little high, but I found some for around $140.

I use a magicshine for commuting, but it's a bit bulky with the battery pack:

I would also say to forgo any major concerns about the aero-ness of light systems - remember, you're riding at night (no PRs).

Weight and bulk should be considered, but for me, convenience and effectiveness are most important.

I clip one of the Planet Bike Superflashes to my seat bag and use one of the Blackburn Flee lights up front.

The Blackburn uses a vecro strip to attach so I will attach it to the top part of my fork. Could attach it to my helmet but...

Both are light, aero, and VERY bright and seen easily, even in daylight.

I also have two Magicshine kits. They work well for bar mounting. And they're inexpensive enough that I don't mind strapping them to my mountain bike for night rides, or leaving them for short time periods on the commuter (if I have to stop for groceries or whatever).

The Vis360 is the most compact/elegant solution specifically for a helmet that I've seen.

I use a profile design computer mount, and let it hang down from my s-bends, then mount the front light to that. Rear light mounts on seat stays.

After a couple of people around here people got hit from behind last year, I bought a pair of Dinotte lights. They are expensive, but are the brightest lights I've ever seen. There are multiple flash modes, and I'm visible from the rear for 1/2 mile in the bright daylight. At night, I have to run low power so it's not too bright in people's eyes.

The front light can be mounted on bars or helmet. Mine is on the helmet, which is nice b/c I can shine it right at someone up ahead if it looks like they're not paying attention.

BTW: my training buddies have these same lights ... when riding together, we look like a circus.

Money well spent.

Knog frogs...these wrap nicely around any shape. Eg: seatpost, seatstays, fork, basebar of my argon e112...through two holes in my helmet...handlebar, headtube, fork, seatstays of my cross bike (double wrapped). No good to use as headlights but good to get YOU noticed. Be safe everyone.

Hi all,

Just resurrected this thread. Just relocated from the Pacific Islands to Singapore. I need some lights that will fit a tri bike as riding very early to beat the heat and traffic. Ceepo Katana 2009. New PD tri bars. Seat post is shaped like a wing, so standard rear lights will not fit post. I'd be grateful for suggestions. Searches have drawn a blank-there must be something out there?

Thx in advance.

cheers

There was another thread about a month ago which covered the rear - worth a search maybe.

What I have is a little Exposure TraceR light, and their aero seat post bracket.

Not cheap but nicely made in England. And Exposure's customer service is great here.

Can be got separate, or with their front Trace light (or other brighter front lights).

For front lights for seeing where you're riding (vs being seen by others) the other Exposure lights cannot be faulted.
Again. Quality so not cheap.

I like products where the manufacturer isn't using kids or a government regime that's oppressive.

My solution was to buy a Go Pro mount that clamps onto my aero bars (which are round) along with a Garmin Varia front light, which attaches by a Go Pro style mount. There are a gazillion different Go Pro mounts, so you should be able to find one that fits your aero bars.

I use 2 Lezyne strip drive 400's in the front on the aerobars and 1 strip drive 150 in the rear. Fits nicely around aero bars and seat posts and gives a decent amount of light.

I no longer ride in the dark on my tri bike, it's either road bike or trainer. However, I used to use a Topeak Bar Extender to provide round bar space below the extensions for mounting my front light. It worked perfectly and kept the light entirely out of the way and unobstructed. It's relatively inexpensive solution. I'm sure there are other similar products.

Just to offer you a slightly more Heath Robinson approach for the front light. I tried out the gopro option on the extensions - I bought a a Barfly with Wahoo/Garmin mount up top and gopro beneath - but I didn't like it. It seemed really clunky and not especially aero, to me at least.

When I needed a compulsory front light for a race I mounted it under the stem like below. Happens my Tririg Sigma XF stem has a pretty flat underside so I used some velcro tape and tie wraps. The tape was more for cushioning than adhesive and it worked well for my particular light as it is has pretty square sides. I wouldn't do this if I wanted to swap the light between bikes, but for use just on the TT it was spot on and I could access the port to charge it. The light is upside-down so that I can push the button.

No idea if it is actually aero here, though, being placed directly in front of the head tube. Couldn't go on top of the stem as my bottle cage is there, and it would probably have been obscured by my hands.

Pardon the mess in my garage, but you can get the idea:

Cheers, Rich.

I've literally just bought and mounted this. Not used it yet so I can't give it a review. But as far as form-factor goes it is ideal. Not even dirtying up the seatpost air
