In no particular order....
The RD (Michael Epstein) and the location (Zuma Beach Malibu) make for a great event. There are tons of little touches that make it nice for the athlete and it's beautiful.
Something I've never see before during a triathlon: ~mile 48ish of the bike we were back on PCH, right along the ocean and, for you who know the area - where Deer Creek dumps out on to PCH, a Panga boat had hit the beach in the pre-dawn hours. By the time we rolled up law enforcement had stacked the bales of weed into trucks. A search had been done for folks in the water but none were found - hopefully they made it to shore safely. Thanks to the Ventura County Star for their coverage. This pic doesn't do it justice, the boat was 35ft long and on the sand getting bounced around a bit by small surf. 577lbs of the devil's lettuce was removed.
Typically locals here benefit from a NW wind but we had to ride the last 45min (an hour for some) in a head wind to get back to T2. Another oddity for the day was that coastal temps are commonly cool and man was it hot on the run.
Peter B (Gymrat here on the ST Forum) passed me on one of the many out-and-back sections of the run and handed me a few ice cubes at the most perfect moment - that gave me ~5k of relief.
