This bike is at Redman...

A friend of mine is doing Redman tomorrow and posted this on his facebook page today...

A MTB... with aero bars, and Di2.. and a fork which alone is worth more than my bike. He's doing the full tomorrow... and good luck to him! but seriously, bottle cage on the down tube?! so not aero.

How many watts did he save by cutting off half the fork?

He should be ok, he will lose a lot with the tires, but hes still relatively aero. The 29er wheels are going to help his gearing a lot.

Gotta watch out for those guys they can be ringers! I took a pal from the swim team to a couple of sprint races and he took 2nd and 3rd OA on a mountain bike! He had 'heard' what a triathlon was and said it looked fun. Was quickly bored with it and never did another one and that was over 20 years ago.

I rode a full-suspension mountain bike with slicks on it in a hilly Oly race once. Then got a road bike, trained on it like crazy, and got the exact same mph avg the next year with the same conditions. Only thing I can figure out is you get less rolling resistance on the fatties and can bomb downhill with the full-suspension like a mad man (which I did). Still baffles me to this day. I didn't go out of my way to make the mountain bike like a tri bike like this guy did, though.

My guess is a triathlete who has had some back or neck problems and has possibly come to the conclusion that being more upright and having suspension up front would be a good thing for them health-wise. I am not sure if this is really accurate, but people have done crazier things to try to continue participating in a sport. I can't really come up with any other explanation for this... If my theory is wrong, then I have to ad this one to the WTF file and would love to hear from the owner or the shop that built this up for them as to the rationale behind this build.

The only problem I see is his saddle doesn't match the bike colors. Tsk, tsk.

Yet the spokes do. I'm gonna have to follow this guy. If he finishes, he is my new hero.

Personally, I am looking forward to someone coming into a race with a circa 1989 triathlon bike and blowing everyone away that has spent $5,000+ for their bike. The times are not much different and I bet the average speed for the group as a whole was faster back then.

Yep, looks like he is 40+ Clyd. Went 7:43 on the bike. Should have changed those Alum bottles cages for some Carbon ones, would have saved him 1.5 minutes...

An aerojacket is missing in that rig although a lot of cash went into it.
That wheel data won't be on the wheelbuilder database I guess.

Sorry I don't have the picture anymore (I broke my phone), but there is a guy running around MN doing 70.3 and OLY tris on a "Fat Bike". Its a Surly Pugsley with full aero cockpit ect. He also runs a Lazer Tardiz helmet.

He did Superior Man 1/2 this year. He flated on the bike and had to walk it back in. Friggin Clown LOL.

I saw that guy. I passed him as he was running with his bike near the Glensheen mansion.
