Think you have enough carbon?

How many miles do you give these chainrings? 50? 100?

Those look SWEET!

I know very little about the wear characteristics of carbon fiber, but based on my ability to shred two sets of aluminum chainrings on my mountain bike every season, I'd think they wouldn't last 500 miles. But that probably means I'm missing the point, which is to sell a crapload of expensive chainrings that need constant replacement.

What ever happened to steel? The metal of a lifetime!

Notice the crank area of this bike. There is only the big chainring and no front deraileur. I was at Hi-Tech a little while back and asked Hank about some Shimano carbon chain rings. He said the people who were using them had very good luck with them and that they were designed for single chainring applications.

He did mention, however, that he had one guy who was using at least on carbon chainring in a front shifting application and was having good results.

While I think these things look amazing, I would be willing to bet that you would be very hard pressed to prove any kind of improvement.

Just my $0.02....

and when talking about the bike they can now also say "I saved another 2 grams of weight and lowered the radar cross-section down to the size of a swallow.. So "the Man" will never see me coming...

Of course the next question is: African or Eurpoean swallow???

Although they do look really cool (ie so do carbon crank arms, seat posts, water bottle cages, headset spacers, etc.) I can't see that they'd make you any faster plus the "Shock-N-Awe factor" could be a little less when you pass by the full carbon bike with the snapped chainrings as it is being walked back to the bike start :)

Well, there you have it. The single dumbest thing I have ever seen put on a bike.

Rich bike consumers are a bottomless well of stupidity.

I bet there would be "Shock and Awe" as spectators watch you flip over the bars and face plant (Spinergy wheel style) as your carbon chainrings snap as you sprint up the final climb in a race.....
