The ST Virtual Swim Meet - 2019/2020
OK, swim season is starting (in the northern hemisphere), I think some have already raced and I have my first meet coming in November. So lets have a meet here.

Rules:
a) Post your times, from a REAL MEET, here (this is deliberate....), and your age / gender along with the meet format (SCY, SCM, LCM, or even OW). I'll periodically update the leaderboard with the times. If you forget to post your age and gender, I am going to assume that you are a 45-49 y/o male. Why? Because that's the AG I'm in. Don't want to be a 45 y/o dude? Then post your real age and M/F.

2) The season runs from September 2019 through March 2020 (we can do a separate meet during championship season)

e) your age for virtual meet purposes is your age at the first real meet you swim at.

iii) times will be converted to SCY using the swimswam.com time conversion utility. *note: 100IM and 800IM aren't options in the converter. In those cases, you would enter your 100IM or 800IM time as a 200IM or 400IM event, respectively.

4 (base 16) - if you get deked, post your time anyway with a note saying that you were dq'd. Then go buy yourself an ice cream from DQ.

101) There will be some kind prizegiving at the end. With real actual virtual prizes... ;-)

Addendum - I've decided that the "flagship" event will be the 400/500 free, in the spirit that some people may be unable to compete in all strokes. I think everyone here can swim freestyle.

Sounds fun, thanks for doing this. I have a few meets and will post results.

Any "flagship" events that we should target to enter? Would be fun to have everyone have results in one common event, e.g 100 free.

okay I'll go first

SCM meet this past weekend, I converted the swims for you. Male age 53

200Im 2:43.50, 2:27.29 scy
100Fl 1.11.42, 1:04.34
100Fr 1:05.11, 58.65
100IM 1:15.28, 1:07.80 (SS didnt convert this event I used another converter)

Meet report. My first SCM meet ever so I did lifetime best times in everything! My 200IM time converted to a small drop from my suited swim from April so that was great start. 100Fr/FL were off those April swims by 1-2secs so not too bad and the 100IM was a pretty big drop from a meet last January when I was just getting back into it. Screwed up a couple turns because I was looking at the bottom instead of looking ahead for the wall. Splits were even except my fly I died pretty hard the 2nd 50. Was leading my IM heats at the midway point but got crushed in breaststroke both times. Ugh I hate breast. Next meet is weekend after Thanksgiving its SCM again and I will probably do a week rest and shave/suit up since its a regional championship type 3 day meet. Looking to drop 1-2 seconds off these swims.

OK Nov 16th I have a meet with 50 fly, 100 fly, 200 fly and 200IM.

I expect to do the following events by end of season

fly 50, 100, 200
back, 50, 100
breast 50, 200
free, 50, 100, 400, 800, 1500
IM 100, 200, 400, 800 (Masters Swimming Ontario)

I suppose I will need to do the 200 back and 100 breast, but those will be splits from IM's....do they count for ST virtual meet? Also, can we post times from relay legs for this meet?

Right now I am male 50-54. Jan 1 I go to male 55-59. What's the ruling on the age we use for this ST meet? I'll actually be 54 for the entire duration of the ST meet if that helps.

Just post everyone's results in one list per event sorted fastest to slowest and put all the participants and their sex, ages in a list at the top. Sort the participant list by age and people can easily see who their nearest competition is. When I look at meet results I usually look to see how many swimmers older than me beat me and then any in the next age group down and everyone else I don't consider them my competitors. Also I like to swim faster than all the women regardless of age lol.

I think the rule for USMS nationals was age on last day of meet but the local meet this weekend said age as of Dec 31 of current year? Confusing.

Well since this IS a triathlon forum, everyone should do a a 1500m free time. Honestly I don't really care which one you guys pick because I'll be doing every event there is in swimming over the winter more or less (because i am new to this and slow, so may as well experience all events in all strokes and all distances)....but if there is going to be swimmer one upmanship on a triathlon forum minimally we should all see how we stack up to Alistair Brownlee in the 1500m (or 1650y).

Masters swimming Ontario has the 800IM. I believe last year at Provincials we had around 30 athletes entered between men and women. It was pretty popular. I also did it in two other local events during the 800 free and it was judged and recorded as 800IM. Both of those were long course so I am the only one to have done the 800IM in LCM and I am currently the so called overall provincial record holder just because no idiot wanted to try doing it LCM. But hey, you gotta take whatever victories you can.

see rule e) -

your age for virtual meet purposes is your age at the first real meet you swim at during the virtual meet season.

eg. I'm going to be 48 at my upcoming meet in November. I turn 49 in December, but when I swim at a meet in January or February of 2020, I'll still report my results as a 48 year old.

If I skip the November meet and don't race until January, then my results will be put up as a 49 year old.

yeah, but I hate the 1500. so that one's out...

I'm thinking of either 200IM or 400 free. If I was cruel I'd say everyone has to swim 200 breast, but that would mean I'd have to swim it and I'm a wimp...

I will have to join USMS and find a meet, but I've been wanting to get some real pool times anyway. Strangely, while I keep hearing great things about master's programs in Austin none of them seem to host any meets, at least none on the LSC's calendar.

You guys have spring masters nationals next year!! So you can get in your car and just drive to the biggest meet of the year, even more so than summer nationals. I would guess being in Texas, there might be 2400 or so athletes competing, and every AG will be stacked with super fast times. Texas along with Florida and CA is one of the big masters powerhouses, so bring your tight suit!

Right now I'm half in and out on this one, would like to go to Texas, have a ton of relatives there and is where I was born. But being the oldest in the age group is a huge disadvantage to me, so it would just be for personal reasons, the next year will be competitive for me again...

Yes, I saw that nationals are in San Antonio, which is only about a 1.5hr drive for me. That is a pretty low bar to get to a national championship meet. but it would fall outside of Jason's virtual swim meet season.

I'm pretty lazy though, I live less than a mile from one good swim program, the UT master's program is only 2 miles from my office, a 3rd program could be on my commute to work, and yet I continue to swim by myself at the YMCA that is only 2/3rd of a mile away.

Too funny, while I was in Orange County, I was within 4 to 10 miles of at least a 1/2 dozen great masters programs, and I choose to swim in my HOA lap pool with no lane lines, by myself too. There was just something about being able to go anytime, and have it take just a few minutes I guess. Every once in a great while I would go out to the groups, and it was great fun, and I felt like I would go more, but didn't. I think it comes down to guys like you and I, can just do the work on our own, and it is not really a big bother. I enjoy swimming alone, as well as with groups, but alone is fine..

200IM is a nice combo of fast twitch and slow twitch and combines everything in the sport, so that sounds like a plan. Just make sure Phelps stays in retirement because 2020 is an Olympic year and he has a 200IM streak that goes back from 2016 to 2012 to 2008 to 2004 so he COULD extend his streak by replacing the Olympics for an ST meet.

Meet results from Sunday

Scm result, scy converted time

400 free. 504.87, 5:48.42
50 fly 31.48, 28.36
100IM. 114.63. 1:07.23
50 back. 36.31. 32.71
100 fly 110.11, 1:03.16
200IM 2:43.49. 2:27.28

Meet report. Signed up for this the day before after swimming a meet the prior weekend and then I took Monday off and swam the next 5 days. I was looking for a November meet and this was the only one and fortunately wasn't too far a drive. New events I did were the 400 free and the 50 back. I easily beat my estimated entry times in these which was a nice surprise splitting 113, 16,17,18. Was definitely fading at the end but still happy with it overall. Fly was a lot better than prior week with a 1.3 sec drop split it 33/37. Six events was like a workout but the big benefit was just getting on the blocks without thinking about the race too much. I think I'm going to switch from the 50/100 free to the 200/400 cause there is more room to improve and it really didn't hurt that bad lol. Hoping to get on the treadmill this month and test my knee out to see if I can give swim/run Catalina a try in march

50 fly
1500 free (I missed the Prov Record by 2s last time I swam it, grr....(edit - 2.12 seconds to be precise). shaving and breaking out the fast suit this time around, this is my last chance to get it so can't leave any speed on the table).

Curious what is your weekly yardage/meters total when you are training to do a 1500? I raced a 400 last weekend for the first time I don't think I could do a longer race without a lot more training unless I just swam it in workout mode like a lap swimmer.

Thanks for putting this together Jason. I swam an SCM meet in San Diego this past weekend, 03 November. I'm a 61yo male (turned 61 on 18 October). I swam the 200 and 800 freestyle, 50 breaststroke and 100IM. I SUCK at ANYTHING other than freestyle.

800 freestyle - 11:06.60 SCM time; converts to a 12:41.82 1000 SCY time.

200 freestyle - 2:32.46 SCM time; converts to a 2:17.35 SCY time.

100IM - 1:39.58 SCM time; converts to a 1:29.71 SCY time.

50 breast - 54.29 SCM time; converts to a 48.90 SCY time.

I will be aging up the week AFTER spring nationals. The same thing happened 5 years ago. I think only four times in USMS history has nationals been held before my birthday, and twice it has been when I am aging up. GRRR. So as much as I would like to go to Austin, it looks like Y Nats in May for me.
