Got a look at the newer versions of the HED bars, they have made two changes that I can see, one is that there is now a front brake cable guide on the aluminum mount underside and the other is that the bars now come with carbon armrests vice the aluminum ones on the first models.
My impression of the carbon cups is that although they look nice and weigh less, they have a deep set groove to facilitate the bolts that attach them to the aluminum mount. This groove, approx 1/2", allows the pad to settle in and may feel uncomfortable when putting pressure on the front or rear of the armrest cups. These gap/groove in these cups also present a gap or pocket which can cause wind resistance. The first edition aluminum armrests are more practical in my opinion and have no groove - sit flush.
Once you have the armrests adjusted I would reccomend that you silicone glue the pads directly to the armrests - dont mess with the velcro, it does not work.
If you use warming oil before a race be sure to completely clean your hands becuase the all carbon brake handles can get slippery.
