The March Fish Thread

Started off March with a solid 3500 yards. I have about 10 extra minutes in the mornings this week and plan to capitalize on that with some more yards.

Warm up:
500 Swim
6x50 Drills
Main set: Done on the 1:25 base.
1x400 - Came in at 5:01, really focusing on EVF.
2x300 - 3:36 and 3:34.
3x200 - 2:28, 2:25, 2:23.
4x100 - 1:09, 1:09, 1:06, 1:04
Then got into a big (for me) kick set. I won't even post those intervals!
1x100 Free kick
4x50 Kick on side
1x100 Kick on back
4x50 Kick on side

Have a great month of swimming! Spring is coming and my big swim push will start to calm down after my March 19th meet. I gotta fit those bike miles in at some point!

400 continuous (50 free, 50 kick alternate)
10x100 (held 1:25... it's hard enough for me)
4x50 cd

I've no immediate plans to swim.

If anyone wants to join the years-in-the-making Spreadsheet Challenge, that link is here:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/...KCPw&ui=2#gid=64

If you've signed up previously, you are still signed up. If you have never signed up and want to, PM me or tigerchik and include your real e-mail address.

Once you are signed up, go to the link above, make sure you're signed in, add your name to the next column on the right, designate whether you swim yards or meters, put in your distance goal, and the number of swims you think it will take you to complete that goal, that's it. Then go back each time you swim and record the distance; everything else will calculate automatically.

Don't forget to put in a distance goal, otherwise the sheet will perpetually show you as behind!

I am in awe of all the fish here in ST!
Would it be possible for you to put in your workout postings: how long you've been swimming and competitive experience, i.e. Division I college, etc.?
I think it would helpful to all of us "amphibians" who aspire to see a 100 on the 1:00.

Wow!! Nice set of IM's there, did you do it 200 of each stroke, or some variation?? I think I will stick to 400's, but even then I couldn't hold you 800 pace!!
Very heavy arms today after the 55x100's@ 1;15 yesterday, but got a bit better as the workout went on. And I like the last posters idea of pointing out your age and background;

That was just one of those odd sets that someone threw out as a challenge. They were straight 800's. Splits on last one were 2:23 (fly) 2:30 (back) 2:57 (breast) 2:07 (free).

I decided that this month is going to be IM/fly focus... just to mix it up.

Happy Birthday, monty.

37 yo... swimming forever

Like I said, super solid set, and you are no spring chicken. What does that make me? I like the fly/IM focus for the month, I will be doing the same thing myself, as i will be getting ready for masters nats. Good to have you aboard the fish thread, looks like you have been pretty much a lurker for awhile. But we are determined to smoke out all the secret training fish here, we need the support and carrots out there to shoot for. And folks don't have to be ex div 1 finalists, everyone can set and achieve their own short and long term goals.

Me for instance, I will disect your 800 set into 200's to begin with, and see if I can hold you 800 averages for 4x 200's IM. Might take me a couple shots at it, but best part is that just trying will make me faster, so thanks for my next inspiration Andy, welcome aboard..

And now for my abridged bio:
I'm 55 and was a competitive swimmer from 8 yo thru high school, then burned out. Started recreational bike riding in the 80's and got back into swimming in 2000 when the company I work for added a 25 yd pool in the backyard. In 2002 a coworker who is a pro triathlete convinced me to enter a sprint tri. I placed 3rd and was hooked.

I'm cutting weight and the body is starting to revolt. Today was a struggle fest in the pool that ended up cut short so I could make it to work on time.

Anything and everything just to make it up to 1500 SCY

I am 26, with no swimming background other than playing on the beach. I started triathlons in 2009 and at the time was swimming close to 3:00 100's, now I'm down to around a 1:15 100... but not today or yesterday.

I have a question for the real fish on here: My pull has... let's say, less than desireable form. I am currently working with a friend who swam in the big 10 to iron out my stroke problems, but I am now having some elbow problems. I don't think it is tendonitis, it feels like a possible strain on the UCL. Has anyone else experienced elbow problems? Were you able to diagnose what part of your stroke was causing it? How did you eliminate the problem.

I know I can rest it, ice it, strengthen the muscles around it, so on and so forth to eleviate the problem, but since I am about 99% sure this is being caused by a problem with my stroke, I would like to work on the cause rather than the symptoms.

I would tape my stroke for all of ya'll to bash me, but I don't know anyone with an underwater camera.

Bio - I should have swam in high school instead of getting beat up on the field and on the mat. I started swimming at 19 to get a job as a lifeguard. I started triathlons in 2005 and completed all distances in less than a year. I am 38 and somehow still managing to swim personal bests in the pool.

Just 2000 SCY in the local masters team "triathlete lane" which is always an interesting experience. Yep, all the lanes are segregated by speed except ours. I've taken off my watch, don't bring pool toys, do all flip turns, don't show up with a water bottle from a tri, attempt all four strokes (3 of them badly, freestyle is OK), and give what I got without whining about the 7 mile run I just did that afternoon. Last night finished with 8 x 50, odds all under :34, evens easy, rest of the lane was ~50s, so I led...still not one scintilla of respect. I don't mind for now...just starting masters swimming and will be asked to move over a lane or two soon enough, right?

3050 SCY

3x200 free warmup
4x50 kick
2x100 8 beat kick drill
