This article resume very well my way of coaching in the water.

http://trisutto.com/the-pull-buoy-debate-2/

i work mostly with triathlete that have no swim background....teaching them to swim under 1h at ironman... or under 50min and in the lead! the principal and approach is the same.

the pool deck is always crowded with toys....

I love using "toys" when I swim. But boy do the "swimmers" give me a bad time.

They're a tool for swimmers, a crutch for triathletes.
Pull Buoy = Triathlete crack

For some reason it never occurred to me to buy anything for swimming other than a speedo and goggles. Plus if I bought any of that stuff I'd have to go swimming and well I can't live with that type of pressure.

That's because triathletes don't know how to use it properly.

Under 50 min? Just wondering how many age groupers without a swim background swam under 50 min this season. 1-2? excluding IM Chattanooga and similar downstream courses.

Wow, that pool looks shallow. Flip turn without hitting your head?

Half my swim sessions are with pull buoy, half without. I used to have it between thighs like everyone else. Now I mostly use it between my ankles.

Funny, triathletes who swim with that crutch are kicking ass....

Please humor me, and tell me why I should use a pull bouy..

My current bag of toys includes earplugs, and a $1.95 pair of swedes.. Thats it.

I see you found a creative way to out yourself as a non-swimmer.

x2

I trained an Olympic trials swimmer a couple of times before I left the health club I was at. She swam with a pull buoy religiously.

Yup.

The issue isn't hitting your head, it's scraping your feet on the bottom as you dolphin kick off the wall.

interessting Brett Sutton posted a blog about exactly the same today
http://trisutto.com/the-pull-buoy-debate-2/

the problem for me is just that I can't really use it much more anyway...;-)

Only annoying part about the pb is that I sometime get quite an abrasion from the edge of my pb on the inner thigh. but the very smooth ones are not good either as they tend to get to slippery after a while.

I understand what the swedes are for. Not sure about that other thing.

Mine also has a speedo. Goggles and earplugs is not a sexy way to go skinny dipping.

Competitive pool swimmers can flip turn in less water depth than that, no problem.

No doubt. I'm not a competitive pool swimmer. I played water polo in hi school / college and avoided the swim team at all costs

Really depends what we're defining as 'triathlete' firstly.

If we're talking everybody participating in triathlons then maybe 1/2 of them will be involved with the sport for 2-3 years and then move on, whether kids or bucket listers. And then take into account (at least here in NZ) all bar may be 1 - 2 races per year are non-wetsuit, and the rest wetsuit legal..... You really have to ask yourself the question where is my time best spent for that one particular athlete in front of me. What are their goals?

As with all things coaching - 'it depends' is usually the answer.

For sure pullbuoys are used alot as 'crutches' by some, and as a useful tool for a variety of interventions that are athlete specific, by others, wouldn't you agree?
