TDF Stage 9 (Spoiler alert)

Another puncture for Tony Martin. More fuel for the clincher vs. tubular debate? So far he is 2 for 2 this tour.

He still sits at the top of the leader board though.

Certainly fuel for the specialized tire guys!
Hey Jordan Rapp, can you get any inside info on what caused these flats?

just bad luck?

Probably:

1. Bits of broken glass
2. Thorns
3. Little sharp stones

they sweep those courses though.
anyway if it was any of those 3 things, a clincher wont flat any more easily than a tubie.

if it was pinch flats, that would be (maybe) easier on a clincher.

if it was installation error..well probably the mechanic will make sure nobody every knows! haha

Matt Goss on twitter. "Probably could have used smaller gears than 44-23 at one point on that course today"

To which Renshaw responds. tell me about it. At one point I was doing 56rpm full gas."

Is there a reason for the huge gearing or are they just using their standard TT setup and didn't realize the hills would be so severe?

What tires was he riding...maybe hard to tell with the re-badge.

I imagine some of them just get sucked into "push big gears for a tt" idea and didn't bother to change it for today.

probably not a big deal because I imagine the parts that steep are real short.

remember most of the riders are just in the TT to get through it, so they won't do course recon or really bother to optimize their setup always.

The prologue at least he was on some new super fast prototype specialized clincher tire.

Don't know if he stuck with them for today.

Actually I think some of them were just surprised by some of the climbs. Lieuwe Westra said in an interview with the Dutch NOS that whoever made the profile for this stage was doing something wrong as there were some serious climbs.

From reportsstage 9 is not a pure time trial specialist course - plus they have a week of riding in the legs and this is alot longer and tougher than the prologue.

Could be some surprises in store I'm hoping Cuddles turns the tables and is in yellow tonight!

If anyone hoping to do well is surprised thats a shame. Surely every team that cars about this stage would at least send someone to drive the course.

Seeing several riders with Specialized helmets with visors. Don't think I've seen that before.

Velonews live feed had this quote from Garmin's David Millar after his TT:

Millar expects the race's general classification to be shaken up, saying the climb in the middle of the race is harder than most believe. "It's actually harder than the profile shows," added the Scot, who nonetheless did not preview the course beforehand. "It's steep, I didn't expect it to be that steep. It's a really good course for the guys who can climb and time trial, (Chris) Froome, Wiggo and Cadel."

vote for Evans!

i hope so too, but that would force BMC to work extra hard, right? Maybe they'll just let a few breaks slip.

Wow....Teejay just went under FC at the first checkpoint.

Impressive...we'll see if he can maintain it.

the whole team mate setting pace thing boggles the mind a bit.

I suppose if you had a shit ton of power data on both riders you could somehow have the team mate go out and set fastest splits, look at the power, backwards calculate the power needed for you GC contender to duplicate it, and make the call if its safe to set that as a power goal or something.

I'd be more inclined to just set the power goal of the GC contender on his recent training and racing data though.

you could get some good intel on the corners by bombing them though. "don't bomb corner 7, I died"

Well if nothing else it will make the race somewhat more interesting and force Wiggins to attack in the mountains. If Wiggins knows he can take time off Cadel in all the TT's then he will just suck his wheel all the way to the finish it could be the most boring TDF ever. Even if Cadel attacks in the mountains he is usually alone and Wiggins has a much stronger climbing team so he will alwyas have team members to help him chase down.

that's what i really don't want to see. i tuned out of the Giro last year partly b/c of the death of Weylandt and then totally lost interest after Contador put on a show on Vesuvius. And there was even a chance that the second place finisher would be promoted pending CAS ruling, but it really didn't interest me...

If the GPS time splits are accurate Wiggins is crushing Evans, up by a minute plus and they're not even to the first time check yet.

Losing lots of time to Froome too, some time to Nibali. Evans is riding a poor TT, unless he can turn it around.

Damn good ride by Teejay. Too late to make him the USA selection for the Olympic TT?

Wiggo and Froome are destroying everyone. Not sure Froomey is going to hold it though.
