Hi s.t.ers doing my first tri using a Garmin 305. Obviously not going to swim with the monitor, but i was planning to wear the HR strap in the swim leg. Is the strap waterproof, or should i put it on in T1? Thanks angelo.

I don't believe the one that came with the 305 was. You can check your owners manual. If it is at all, it will be for 1 meter for no more than 30 minutes.

You will have no problem swimming with it. I have swam with mine for 3 years in races and have never had a problem.

I'm with peewee, I've swam with my strap for over 2 years without an issue.

If you have a wetsuit on..... it will stay dry. :)

You can get a "soft" strap from Garmin that is bundled with the 310XT. I have worn both in the water for the past 3 years without a problem. The "soft" version has a lower profile and the actual unit is a fraction of the width - so it lays better on the chest.

Dozens of swims in salt/pool/lake over the last 3 years on mine...zero issues.

Mine hasn't had any hiccups after racing a HIM with it underneath my wetsuit.
Sounds like everyone's in agreement on this one: it's fine to swim with in a race.
I just wouldn't wear it in the water other than races. No need to unnecessarily chance killing it.
