Swim Video Analysis of FOTW AG Female Kona 2019
Quote | Reply
Here’s a quick analysis of the stroke of the first AG female out of the water at Kona in 2019. If anyone has any questions, please let me know. I’m happy to help. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aolG6MahEfg[/url]

My mistake. I was messing with a friend earlier and posted the Bug Life’s link unrelated to this post. The link to the video analysis is correct now.

Well, your top Kona AGer has a nice stroke and all but I prefer to try to emulate the best. I'll see your Kona girl and raise you Katie L. :)

Don’t we all wish. The interesting thing about this video was she was a year past Kona. She hadn’t swam much in the last year and I pointed out some of the changes to her stroke in the past year. I did find a video of her swimming right before Kona and it’s fairly dramatic the differences between the two strokes.

As we both are familiar with, it’s amazing how quickly the stroke can become less efficient.

Thanks for watching.

Ya, not swimming much for a year can put a real dent in your stroke. I really like the feel and look of the "gallop stroke" that Ledecky has, but you really have to be in tiptop swim shape to swim that way for very long. That stroke is what I'm always shooting for though. :)

That “loper” stroke has definitely had a resurgence over the last 10-15 years. But yes, you need to be in great shape to pull it off. And typically is better suited for 200 and less.

Is it me or do her hands seem to enter the water a bit early? She seems like she has to reach a bunch before full extension and starting her catch.

She’s short on the right by a bit and the left is fine, but a lot of what you are seeing is she’s rotating all the way through the stroke. Her stroke is fairly long. When she’s going fast her tempo is about 1.7 seconds/stroke cycle. Make sense?

Thanks for that, I showed my wife to get her to start thinking about mental visualization of her pull. Not sure if it is the endless pool affect, but it looks like her elbows hyper extend in her drop. And for sure it seems to be a strength issue at the moment why they drop below her hand, or at least it should be. Otherwise I suppose just something to work on for the future to get those last little bits.

The other thing with the endless pools, you have to kick a lot harder than normal to hold your position, and that can change things up front too, along with moving water being blasted at you..

Welcome. I’ll see if I can post the video from her swimming right before Kona. It’s a side underwater shot in the pool and it looks a lot different.

I’ve found the Endless pool swim currents a little off. 1:10/100 yard range does not feel like 1:10/100 in the pool. It’s harder in the endless pool. But :51/100 feels about right. I had a swimmer in a couple months ago who just went 8:58 in the 1000 and he said the same thing.

Thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate it. And good luck to your wife.

I think that the apparent drop of the elbow early is from the endless pool messing with her feel.
Look at the way the bubbles leave the arm and you can see that she would feel it to be the correct angle as it appears that the water coming from the source has a bit of a downward angle to it close to the water exit from the flume.
She is simply aligning her arm to the water flow and this then has flow on effects for the first quarter of her stroke.
Other than that, a classic two impulse swimmer with a muted 1st third and an emphasis on the ast 2 out of the three phases of the pull.

The cool thing about the Endless pool and doing one on one work with athletes is that it actually increases “feel” for the water. Swimming against the current and the increased sensation it creates is one of a few pieces of immediate feedback the pool provides.
