Just got back from EU and there's paint (OMG PAINT!!!!!) on all the roads the tour uses. Not hearing any pissing and moaning there.

Pretty sure it's irrational response that stems from gang graffiti. Everyone is oversensitive to "tagging" no matter what it is, who did it, with what paint, why and where. OMG tagging is all their brains register and then there's an overreaction. A lot of that going on in USA.

Oh, you mean that part of the world where cycling is actually a part of the culture instead of an annoyance that seemingly infringes upon everyone's freedom?

Different culture probably in EU. I can tell you there are some folks in the country that don't like it on the Ironman Wisconsin course. They have written threats back on the ground, then have acted upon those threats.

why are they angry

This is why people in general piss me off so much. They just say shit, they don't have reasoned and logical position for their thought.

Threats in chalk on the ground? That's pretty funny and more than a little ironic (except the carrying out part...)

Why are they angry, I don't know for sure, but I know where two of the biggest offenders live so hop on a plane and I'll point you to their doors to ask. My guess is they don't appreciate #1 bikers, #2 bikers marking up the road right outside their door. Seems like common courtesy that if you are going to mark roads, that you come back to clean them up right?

Actually, they fought back with I believe spray paint.

Our school system makes kids memorize the capitals of all 50 states, to give an example, but does not teach them how to think. So they grow up into adults who don't know how to make sound reasoned decisions, and don't even know it.

Because in general Europeans are a bit more courteous and considered about how their local communities look and respect each other enough to not get carried away in historic parts of their home cities and Americans are bunch of fucking animals?

I think it's more along the lines that most Americans are just straight up dickwads.

Well, straight up dickwads may be the clinical term for it but I believe Americans are hugely fearful people and that fear manifests itself as anger. They feel easily threatened hence the relentless screaming about MY RIGHTS and spray painting roads to stop spray painters and carrying guns to deter gun play, and tailgating because the other guy is a shitty driver, and on and on.....
So in reference to the earlier post about kids not learning to think, we Americans will do anything to avoid looking inside and thinking through our behaviors, rather we act out by compulsively working, eating, drinking, road rage and doing Ironman's like a lot of you dickwads.

We Americans are about personal satisfaction, the rest of the universe can fuck off. I think that's what you are saying. :) But seriously, I am friends with Kelly whose coaching company got caught in this shit storm. I can say without question she never meant any disrespect of breaking of the law, she is a lawyer for God's sake. But in general, American's have become so reprehensible in their public behavior I want to move my family to New Zealand even though they are bunch of socialists. At leads they are polite.

This is America, land of the HOA requiring a manicured lawn, cars in the garage, identical paint and doors, and everything else possible to make the neighborhood "perfect" and sterile.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that speed, for lack of a better word, is good. Speed is right, Speed works. Speed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

One day i'll get there (lindsey harasses me about it ;). I'm not going to go out my way but if we should incidentally come across these folks I will enjoy making them look stupid. It's easy, you just keep asking, WHY?

This thread is good. Thanks! Glad I'm not the only one that finds such protests out way beyond left field.

Edit: i specifically bought a house in a city neighborhood as opposed to a covenant neighborhood PRECISELY because I didn't want to deal with an HOA. HOA 'hoods have ZERO character to them. My hood? It frikin rocks. All sorts of interesting things going on here... and guess what.... utter chaos has not let loose! Go figure!

I have an NZ exit strategy in place too. <le sigh>

And FWIW, socialism is a continuum. We're socialists too.

Can't compare.

It's different over in Europe. Weather at Etape this year was horrific. 4,000 people had to abandon!! Then if you survived, and made it to the summit at Hautacam, you had to ride back down to get wherever you were going. Total participant abuse. No complaints, from what I heard!

Chances of an event like this being successful in North America = zero!
