Smart Trainer in cold garage
I’m planning to use my smart trainer (Cycleops Magnus) in the garage this winter. Garage is detached and not insulated, so it probably will get below freezing.

Does anyone have experience doing this? Any issues with the electronics freezing and getting damaged?

If it's frozen, the rapid warmup from the trainer getting hot could cause condensation on the circuit board. Not a good idea.

Would it not also cause difficulty in calibration?

Store the trainer indoors and carry it into garage for workouts.

we did it for a year or two..... it reallllllly sucks, don't worry about the electrical crap, I worry about the cold for yourself. get a heater in there and some insulation.

Alex, how did this go? I'm being forced into the garage this weekend. I'm on a Hammer H2 but probably similar tech. Thanks.

It’s been fine mostly. I’ve ridden when my garage was 20 degrees, and I’ll just throw on toe covers, knee warmers, and jacket to start - usually ditch the jacket after 15 minutes.

The Magnus has worked perfectly fine - the power readings have been consistent with my crank. The biggest draw back I’ve noticed is the actual tire. Since the rubber goes from super cold to hot, I’ve had a few flats and gone through a couple of tires after they’ve cracked.

Since you’re using a direct drive, you should be perfectly fine. I’m planning to upgrade to a Hammer or Kickr for the above reason.

you can get a little space heater that will keep that area warm for a small amount of money. I moved recently, but I had the same problem. I put the heater on smart plug that I could turn on remotely 45 minutes or so before I rode on days it got into the 20s.

Come on down, we can commiserate in my cold, detached, uninsulated garage together!

For what it's worth, I've used my Cycleops H2 like that for the past 1.5 years without issues.
