Serious question about Ironman
Quote | Reply
This has been on my mind for about 6 months. I heard the answer is "no" and it bothers me even more. Do you get free beer after an ironman?? Nats did not have free beer and that was off putting. For the price of an ironman though I would expect beer, otherwise I will stick to the local, cheaper races :))

Define beer.
I'm not drinking any Budweiser or the like!

I've had craft at a few, but I won't snub my nose at Mich Ultra or other "domestic" brands. I would much rather see coolers full of beer and water at the end of the finish line than of cokes and other sugary drinks.

You can't leave something as important as beer at the end of a race up to Ironman Inc, a RD or anybody else. They'll screw it up. You MUST take matters into your own hands and plan ahead. You wouldn't leave your retirement planning up to Ironman, would you? Bring your own beer.

I'm with you!

On thread topic, beer at triathlon finish line is in the minority in my experience in general. For various reasons, licensing, property restrictions, etc.

I work for an East Coast race company and we have a beer tent at a handful of our 50 events. At one we have a beer tent and catered BBQ... I'm usually working that one so BBQ and no beer tent for me.

BBQ and beer. . . are you an eastern NC company by chance?

Sometimes its hard for me to think ahead with all the nerves of raceday morning. I need the beer provided. But now that I know you bring your own stash I'm going to find the races you attend and crash your post-race hangs.

Ironman Louisville finishes on 4th Street Live. It's almost impossible to NOT fall into a beer at the finish line.

To answer your question for real, this seems to be up to the individual races. At IMMD in 2016 I recall there was a craft brewery pouring for anyone with a wrist band. At IMTX both times I did it there was Shiner Bock available at the finish. But other IMs I have done have not had anything. Maybe it's a local permitting thing, or just what the RDs do.

Thanks. That is what I was after. I guess that makes sense that it’s more of a localized matter and not just all Ironman events. Obviously, I’d prefer to be at one that does include this perk upon finishing if I were to make the plunge (: I’ll be sure to email the RD or whoever is in charge.

I did a local (non USAC) bike race that was part of a small-town German heritage festival, called Tour of Brats (tagline: The Wurst Ride). Not only did you get free craft beer from the tap in the biergarten at the finish, you actually got one or two minutes off your official time for eating one or two bratwurst. Seriously, you got a ticket with each brat that you took to the scoring table. And the entry fee was something like $35. Needless to say, I intend to return every year until I can no longer ride.

I'm not sure why do you need to swim, bike or run any distance if you want to get drunk. Just get some alcohol and drink it.

You can combine it in some weird french way, of course if you want https://www.marathondumedoc.com/en/

Everything is better after a race - even beer.

Regarding the Marathon du Medoc; the awards on arrival sound particularly awesome:

S.13 Awards on arrival
All entrants will be rewarded until 6:30 hours race.
This time is long enough to enjoy the marathon even for a beginner.
  • many drinks Supplies ;
  • many grand cru tastings ;
  • many music band animations ;
  • many castles crossing ;
  • Many tasting of oysters, steak, cheese, grapes, ice cream, etc..

I am a big proponent of the determiner 'many'.

I did not fall into a beer at the end of IMLoo.

I fell into some delicious bourbon.

Out of all of my racing, I have only gotten free beer at one race (a local sprint/ oly). Most offer a standard cookout-type food and a bottle of water.

(Honestly, when I race hard enough, I have a hard time wanting any kind of alcohol, or food for that matter, for several hours. Free beer would be wasted.)

The couple of IM I've done in Europe all had free beer at the end. The ones in the US, no.

My palate can't even handle shitty spaghetti at the end of an Oly...beer legit tasted like urine. So how am I going to feel in Traverse City? Better be some Cherry Wine, ya Feel me?

Ditto. And I've done quite a few races. I will say it was probably the best Corona I've ever tasted, and it lasted all of about 10 seconds!

Back in the old days every 5k,10k and certainly every triathlon had a couple kegs at the finish line. Then somewhere along the line someone figured that may it is not such a good idea to get a bunch of runners driving home from a race drunk at 10 in the morning. What is up with that. I know a couple times watching Ironman (the only and best one) I gave a few beers out to guys that looked thirsty in the finish area. Sometimes you just have to supply your own beer.

IM Boulder has a free beer garden right on the finish line. Tim (RD) gets local craft beer / Avery beer and keeps it stocked all afternoon and night.

Way more important question is, do you get free poutine at the end of 70.3 Mont Tremblant. And the answer is... yes. Yes, you do. Worth the price of admission right there. Sorry, not much of a beer person. ;)

Edited to add... if you win your AG at Escape From the Rock, you get a bottle of wine. I have never been more sad to miss an award ceremony (had to catch a flight... couldn't bring the wine in my carry-on anyway, would have had to check it). So if free booze at completion is on your list of race criteria, make note of that one. And swim/run fast.
