Well Dan and I may have found out one of the reasons for our recent demises in the pool. IT has been over a 100 degrees for a few weeks, often over 110 here. Just assumed the pools were about 83, found out today that it has been 58, probably 86 on some days too. After many days of complaining, it pitched up at 82 today, and felt cool and great! What a difference a few degrees make at this level, night and day:

1000s@15.00 (14;02-- 7;10/6;52)
500IM kick@10;00(9;27)
500p@6;45(6;19)
500IM kick@10;00(9;30)
10x50@1;00 descend(40/39/39/38/37/37/36/36/35/33)
3000SCY

First time since I have been back where I did not wilt, and felt like I could keep going, all due to water temp. Here's hoping all the old ladies now complaining that it is too cold, do not get the upper hand. 85/86 is great if you stand on the bottom and talk the whole hour, 82 is for fishes!!

9.4 mi easy run (92:50)
1850 yd swim

25 kick
1000 w/u
5 x [50 kick + 100 "fast"*]
75 c/d

*they were putting water in the pool via a fire-fighter sized tube and a lot of water pressure, which was kind of fun because I kept getting pushed toward the lane line and had to work more to stay in the middle... but it messed with the splits

Pools are still closed here (WHY), but I was at Glacier NP over the weekend and swam 10-15 mins in Lake McDonald. It's gotta be the cleanest, clearest lake I've ever been in. What an amazing place.

Ah Portland, OR area. Pools are a part of phase 2, and the 3 counties in the metro area are stuck in phase 1. Maybe for good reason, but I'd sure love to swim. We were doing OWS, but a couple incidents of drunk boaters killing swimmers in the area and toxic algae in the water....not an option for now. It stinks.

2500 SCY in my 45 minute lane slot
1000FR in 14:09 (7:05/7:04)
6x100P on 1:30 (1:16-8)
4x50P on 45 (38s)
400IM K
8x25 BK/BR on 30

Had run 4 miles before, so pleased with swim workout. Trying swim/run or run/swim workouts to make it 75 to 90 minute session.

Still swimming about 2 to 3 seconds per 100 slower than pre Covid, but only doing 10K per week vs 13K/week before.

I lost my outdoor pool (closed for season) and the times at the nearest indoor pool are not working out with my work schedule, when I can get in, and the other times that are convenient are generally sold out. So I am having to bike 12km away to another pool that is way too hot, but it is what it is....you take what you can get during this Covid19 world.

Today's set was random warmup then a set of 50's as fly-back (with and without fins, probably 66% without, 33% with). Then a few 50's of breast and a final 400IM "hard". My times are now within 15 seconds of pre covid times, so getting there. Total was 46 minutes, 2300m (SCM).

I feel ya on the hot temps. Late in May Garmin seems to have enabled temperature readings on my 935 during swim sessions. The indoor YMCA pool that I swam at pre-Covid claimed 81F pool temp, which I believe. In my HOA pool the water was between 76 (march) - 81 by the end of May. When I transitioned over to the outdoor YMCA pool that I've been at all summer, the water was 82-84F in the AM and 86F if I went in the afternoon. I've always known I overheat easily, which is one reason I'm better at swimming than running, but at 86F I will get really close to puking after any honest effort. This past week the water was 86F Tuesday AM and my planned 5x400 turned in to 3x400 then trying to cool down (not easy when the air temp is also mid-80's) with 2x400 pull. Luckily we've finally gotten some rain, so yesterday the pool was back down to 84F (plus overcast), so I could go pretty hard on 8x200, but it's on the edge.

82F = nice, can work hard without overheating; 84F = on the edge, can't do longer intervals; 86F = going to puke after about 1k.

Today's workout was 500m warmup free, then 6x50 fly-back with fins, 4x50m (dolphin on back 25m-backstroke 25m). Then main set was 200m fly. Got it down to 3:40 in a lose suit in a warm pool wall push off. While I was doing 200m easy free recovery, one of the fast women from the local club was in the lane and she was doing 6x75 breast with 15 seconds rest so I joined her for 6x (50breast-25free) so I could make her times. That was harder than the 200 fly. Then 200 free easy and finally closed off with 400m 50fly-50free in 7 min (dammit, missed one second) and then a cool down for 2700m total

Well. I haven’t swam. Went from intolerable air quality for a week to verified and very active shark sightings for a week to now having stitches on my face and am dry until the 10th. What a way to lose swim fitness.

What happened that required stitches, you say? Oh. Shark attack. By a very geriatric one-dull-toothed shark.... I’ve been trying to spin that story but nobody seems to buy it. Ok. Fine. I was trying to fix the parking break in my truck and it whapped me square between my eyes. I knew it would whap me. And it did. Lame. I know. Two black eyes and stitches. Yay. Worse than goggle eyes.

crap, I prefer the Shark Heroics than getting smacked in the head by a truck parking brake! OK...10 days of cycling now?

My pool access has been limited this week...down to 1x per day 45-55 min depending on when I can get there. Outdoor pool 3km from home is closed for season!!!

2600 SCY (Post 4 mile run)
1500 FR (21:26)
400 IM Kick
4x100P on 1:30 (1:15-8)
8x50 BK/BR/FR on 60 (39-47)

Happy to find out my outdoor pool is staying uncovered until mid October instead of typical mid September (they put a bubble on top). First positive impact of Covid for me so far.

Thats great you get an extra month of outdoor swimming, are they then going to continue with the bubble after that? Hope so

Felt absolutly horrible in the 112 degrees today, so extending by just swim through it mantra. It looks like I may be out of the water for nearly a week, wife going out of town, holiday and Sunday, so tough finding pool times. So went today since I just got called from the waiting list:

15x200's- 3s/3zoomer/6p sm paddle/2IM kick/1buoy@3;30 to 3;00 (3;07 to 2;45 on swims, 4;07/3;58 kicks)

Yesterday was up to 103 or so here and the ocean was sticking to its summer average of 63-64°.
Today though, we woke up to overcast. We planned a SwimRun practice. Hit the water and was pleased to feel the tepid 68° – almost too warm for even a SwimRun wettie. Had a fun little loop totaling just 4 miles between Shaw’s Cove, Fisherman’s Cove, Main Beach and Crescent Bay. The final swim was pretty rough, though... exhausting, in fact, due to the wind picking up rapidly. We could see a wall of fog approaching and within 15 minutes of finishing, we could not see the buoy off of Shaw’s. It’s just 160 yards out. Been cloudy back home all day and stayed a pleasant mid-70s. So nice we took in a four mile run on the trail near us.
