Seat Comfort Issue
I'd love some ideas on how to be comfortable on my bike seat. I have an excellent road/tri bike that I love, however the ride on the seat is still uncomfortable after several months of riding. Yes, I have bike shorts, yes, I have a "womens" seat. Suggestions?

I'd check out this offer from John Cobb. The seats aren't good looking, but I have heard good things about them.

i asked the same questions about seats the other day for my wife. i bought her the serfas dual density after it was recommended. she is only ridden on it once but says it was a big improvement. she tried the terry before but it did not fit her right. if this one doesn't turn decent after some long rides i'll get the cobb seat next.

That's a real tough one, I rode for years before I found the best seat and fit combination. And, even that good combination didn't last long before I made changes that help out my overall comfort. As I have found out over the many years of trial and error, there really are more issues involved when you are trying to find comfort. Sometimes, it's not just about the type of seat.

Although I haven't the female plumbing system, I have seen over the years that the complaints are pretty much the same. Suggesting a seat is dangerous at best... but, I'll try.

These two seats seem to be popular among female triathletes...

San Marco Azoto Triathlon Saddle
Terry Damselfly Women's Saddle

I hope this helps... but, bike seat are a real personal thing. One persons worthless hemorroid scratcher is another persons cushion of air.

I have found that 99 out of 100 times that it is not the saddles's fault. It is usually the fit that is causing the discomfort.

My favorite saddle (we're talking 500+ mile races) is the Brooks Pro leather. Takes a bit of breaking in, but it fits like a glove.

1. Have you been fit on your bike? (By someone who really knows what they are doing.)

2. It may take time to find the right saddle. I ride a Serfas women's pro saddle on my tri bike and a Terry Butteryfly Ti on my road bike. I think I would hate it if they were switched.

3. Once you are fit correctly and have the right saddle, remember it does take some time to "callous up" your sitter.

4. Bag Balm in the shorts.

5. Also know that some days you'll be able to ride forever feeling great. Another day a 20 mile ride will cause pain at mile 1. Alignment of the stars or something, and luckily, this doesn't happen much.

Unfortunatly sometimes it takes a lot of expirementation with different saddles, not all saddles are created equally. It took me 4 different saddles and numerous saddle sores to figure out the right saddle for my particular needs. I have been riding the same saddle brand and model for 6 years. The one time I tried something new (Selle Italia SLR) I regretted it.

Once you do find a saddle and position that woks for you, buy 2 or three of the saddles, just in case. Saddle styles, and availabilty seem to change almost as rapidly as running shoes.
