SavageMan Westernport Wall Videos
Here is some unedited video of some of the early (ie, elite) athletes on Westernport Wall at SavageMan Triathlon. The real carnage on the street comes later as the masses of athletes hit the Wall in bunches.

Dave Scott at about 2:15
Susan Williams shortly after 5:00

Those videos don't do the wall justice. When you round that coner at the bottom and see it for the first time the only thing going through your head is Oh Sh*t! And Killer Miller is even harder.

That is Lucas Mccollum in the first video at about 1:20 - he is a top MD amateur.

Totally agree here. No photos or video can capture the beast-like nature the Wall aside from rounding the corner and slowly working your eyes all the way to the top of it. My jaw literally dropped. It was unreal at first sight. Good thing you get to warm-up with a ~12% climb for a little while before you get to the actual Wall itself. A dude fell in front of me 2/3 of the to the top so I had to unclip; truly disappointing.

I made it up Killer Miller with my legs locking up at the top. I kind of forgot about Miller until I heard the cow bells and screaming when I got close to it (its behind a bend in the road).

Biggest mistake I made of the day: Thinking I was going to be "fine" with my standard 34/25 and mediocre climbing skills. 34/28 at least next time for me...

nice thing about 34x28 is the leadup to the wall you can stay right around threshold, keep the legs fresh and crush it once you get there.

How much video was taken? The video really looks great.

Once I rounded the corner, I looked at the wall for a brief second but immediately started watching my front tire as I didn't want to freak myself out. I must've looked like hell going up because I was giving it everything I could not to fall over right around the same spot Dave Scott fell.

Here's a spectator's video that's got some pretty good carnage.

Great video, noticed a couple ST'ers in there. Have to say though the smoothest, easiest looking climber comes through at around 9:15.

These videos are amazing. I'm always a fan of some good Westernport Wall carnage. But, seriously, those volunteers are AWESOME. They've gotta be exhausted after a day of picking up everyone's bike and sprinting it to the top of the hill.

3rd times a charm. That's the only thing that went right for me yesterday. Felt like a turd on the bike, wanted to die on the run until about mile 4, then felt great taking coke at every station and was able to neg split run but by then too much damage was done. Overall 20 min plus slower than last year, but still had a blast. Congrats on a great race, can't wait to be back next year.

Has anyone seen an athlete break/damage their bike by tipping over, or worse, having someone land on them? That first fall got me thinking as that female athlete fell onto the rear wheel of the guy that was looking like he was going to make it.

That one guy seemed to just refuse to walk the rest of the way, after he fell when that woman turned towards him. Looked like he was gonna make it, if not for that.

Why are people wearing aero helmets for this race???

There are some sections particularly in the last 3rd of the bike course where you can make significant time with aero gear. Most of the ride up to the wall (which is about 1/3 of the way in) is downhill, although in much of the early part your speed is limited by steep turns and road conditions.

You are so smart...
This race has almost 7000 ft of climbing. Its a very, VERY hard bike course! That is why you see a ton of road bikes over tri bikes on it. An aero helmet will not do much for you on this course besides make you hot due to less ventilation.

So actually, it would slow you down due to being hotter.
