Sat: Milano-San Remo Predictions
It's always fun waiting for the first big WC, this Saturday's Milano San Remo.

Will it be some of the guys showing good early season form like Jaksche, Vino, Bettini or will it come down to a galloping sprint between Petacchi, Zabel and Cipo ?

Will velonews and Eurosport have live internet coverage as usual ?

Paolo Bettini. He's a very clever rider with a good team behind him. Quickstep will chase down everything and in the Poggio he'll be after everyone. Plus in the Tirreno-Adriatico he beat pure sprinters like Zabel, Freire and Petacchi. He's the one.

I'll bet my money on Zabel...He's won there multiple times and he's still sprinting well.

Here are my picks:

1. Zabel

2. Freire (I'm obligated to always cheer for Rabobank)

3. Bettini

Cheers,

Puskas

My $ is on Vino. He just won 3 stages at Paris-Nice. Hincapie said when he attacked on climbs, no one could go with him.

I agree - the smart money is on Vino to break away on the Poggio. My dark horse has to be Van Heeswik, given his early season form.

I am saying Cippo as a farewell performance. His team will kill themselves to keep it together and Cipo will retire after the win. If he keeps racing and Pettachi keeps smoking him in the sprint finishes, he will tarnish his reputation as the greatest sprinter of all time. Better to go out like Jim Brown, Mark Allen or Michael Jordan(first time) than Scott Tinley, Dave Scott or Michael Jordan(second time).

Puskas, I think the guys are onto something with Vino attacking on the Poggio and no one being able to hang in his wake. Is Cipo starting ? If he is and it boils down to a Cipo-Petacchi-Zabel showdown, it would be nice to see Cipo win this one after not being invited to the TdF all these years. Then again, if you throw in the towel at the sight of the first mountain, you're not likely to be endearing yourself to Leblanc and crew when they hand out the wildcards in the next edition.

Good point but for the 2004 edition, the ASO has already announced all bu one of the tour wildcards and Cipo/Domina Vacanze (and Phonak) were on the list of wildcards so Cipo is in! Of course that does not mean that the ASO could withdraw the invite! Personally, I think Cipo is biding time and working on his form so that he can not only win some sprints at the tour - he wants to contest the final sprint along the Champs Elysee's which will not only open the door to retirement, but it will cement his place in history at the top of the list of great sprinters!

There are probably thirty guys with a legit shot at winning this race.

VDB could follow Vino on the hill. I'm betting Astorloa, Bettini, Zabel or Van Petegem could as well - these are not huge mountains. My money is on VDB in a breakaway on one of the hills just to spite the Quick Step guys, or Freire in a sprint because he's due and the Spaniards love beating the Italians at home. Dark horse is Millar if he's riding and feels like throwing in a prologue effort at the end, but I doubt he has the form right now.

Oh yeah...Astorloa and Friere...forgot to mention them. Francois, while you are adding Jalabert to the group, let's also throw in guys like Merckx, Hinault, Fignon and Sean Kelley for a dream team event :-).

I guess the main question for this board is whether campy or shimano will win in San Remo on Sat !

To hard to predict, but I will predict pain for many of riders.

Francois Jalabert probably will be one of the first to cross the line, on the back of a motorcyle.

it's just that I am a bit nostalgic...
I really liked Jaja,...too bad he retired, but as pointed out, he will indeed win (on a motorbike)
maybe Nicolas will burst like his bro did...

Not too sure Laurent can win on the motorbike. They rode it into a ditch during Paris-Nice! As for Jaksche, he's not racing, Bartoli is CSC's leader.

funny! specially knowing jaja is very good technically.
Bartoli...he could do something...if he hadn't been plagued by injuries (mostly due to bad crashes I think) you can only imagine what his palmares would be (not that it's not awesome already...)
not to mention he is one of the most stylish rider on a bike

Bettini or Van P.

Hoping for Vino. I became a big fan after last year's tour. If they let him race for himself, I think he has as good a chance as anyone to win in July.

Puskas, looks like you picked the top two in San Remo but got it backwards. I can't believe that a seasoned sprinter like Zabel would actually throw up his arms in victory before the line. Man, I would have never expected a "humble" sprinter (if there is one), like Zabel to throw his hands up before the line. Good for Friere, but Zabel must have been kicking himself for the rest of the day. As for Pettacchi, looks like the 300K day may have wore him down a bit, and its too bad the Cipo got dropped on the final climb and could not be in the thick of the sprint. Anyway, another exciting edition of Milan-San Remo.

it was very easy to pick the winner... Whenever there are a lot of candidates for a sprint finish in an important race... Freire wins :-)
