San Diego Challange Tri
Has anyone done/ or is doing the San Diego Triathlon Challange? I am a bit concerned on how the bike and run will be since it is described as open to traffic, and suggests that there is no one manning the intersections. They go so far to say in the pre-race letter that this is a bike RIDE, not a bike RACE, and to obay all traffic laws.

Should I be concerned, or does this event go off without much problem?

I don't think you should be worried. That is unless you are planning on hammering and running red lights and not obeying general traffic laws. As it says in the pre race lit., it is not a closed course and the event is more of an event, not a race. Almost all of the roads on the bike course have bike lanes.

Mike is right -- and take the advice seriously. This event is more like a bike century ride than like most triathlons. It is NOT a race, so do not go there counting on any kind of PR or AG-finish competition. The bike course is wide open to traffic. Big groups form, and it's safe, but stay out of your aero bars and treat it like the group ride that it is.

The run route is also open, but crosses no major streets and can be taken pretty much at full speed if you're up to it. Just watch out for the 0.75 mile long 400 foot climb at about mile 3, and the descent back down that hill at about mile 11. That hill is my "hill repeats" hill every few weeks.

The swim in the Cove is as nice an ocean swim as there is anywhere. Bring a wetsuit.

BTW -- if any relay teams out there still need a runner, let me know (as long as you don't need me to do it fast).

This is a great event, and that's what it is...an event, not a race. Go with the attitude of having fun and being thankful to participate. Go to the Challenged Athlete introductions the day before. That is totally awesome. And if you want a picture or autograph with Robin Williams, he is usually very accomodating. Have fun!!
