Joan Benoit Samuelson 3:04. Will be 62 years old next month. Wore Bowdoin College singlet and Red Sox hat, as she did when she won 40 years ago.

So, between Saturday & today, he completed 426.2 miles at an average speed of about 70 mph?

I qualified for next year so there is a chance I may run if I make the cutoff. . . So make note of that for next years thread. I may not be an honorable mention, but I can wear an ST singlet if one were available :)

I am curious to know the top ST finish time at Boston. Anyone want to confess?

My guess: I'd figure we have someone under 2:30.

I don’t know about “real” runners, but to me a 2:31 at any point in your life is notable.

I was targeting somewhere between 2:45 - 2:50. Went through half in 1:21 high and managed to hold on for a 2:45 high after my quads threw in the towel at 22. Those last 4 miles are one long slog to the finish! 3 attempts so far and I've never been able to feel good after cresting heartbreak.

Nice attempt at sub 3.

I was targeting sub-3, a life long goal that I have never achieved.

Went through the half at just under 1:31 and thought that this might be the year. Then the Newton hills bit me.

Finished in 3:04:11 and the last five miles are some of the hardest miles that I have run in a long, long time.

Next year........ ;-)

There is no way to negative split that course. First half, it 4 miles pure down hill into 9 of dead flat. Need to be near half marathon PR effort there . PS rock and roll SD is similar.. so you can retain fitness, and try again there with this strategy

Not that I'm notable but I ran 2:40:xx, with a slight negative split FWIW. I'm sure there was a faster STer out there this year.

Haha yea I was in the same boat as him except when I crossed the half way point at 1:31 I told myself there is no way you are breaking 3hrs (and boy was I right haha). No way you are negative splitting that course unless you have 3 hour marathon fitness and decide to run the first half in like 1:45.

You probably want to qualify that to say "There is no way for a mere mortal to negative split that course". Cherono and Desisa both negative split by a minute.

In theory, you could completely sandbag the first half, give yourself some cushion, then save your real race pace for the hard part that follows. You'd gain a negative split, but mostly likely wouldn't PR or anything

Just speculating, of course, as I never have - nor will - run Boston

Simply not true. By any stretch of the imagination.

My old roommate, at ~200lb, ran a 2:42 a few years back, negative splitting by about a minute. You just have to be a smart and well trained runner, which most people are not.

As mentioned in post above yours, likely sand bagged and is a 2:3x guy. Why put in 200lb point without height...
