Running and riding in Falls Church, VA

Hi all. I’m going to Falls Church next week and I’d like some suggestions of where I could run/ride. I’m taking my road bike with me

Cheers

I do not run but the W&OD is fairly popular for runners.

I used to live in Falls Church and the W&OD is great for running and biking. Biking requires a little bit of extra attentiveness, but there are some fun stretches where you can really let it rip. Difficult run is a fun section to test yourself in both directions. There's plenty of trail and you can go all the way out in Purcellville if you're looking for a long ride. If you want some trail running, there's a nice little trial outside a high school in sterling that is fun.

This is a pretty old link, considering Freshbikes hasn't been in existence in over a year.

The W&OD is great for running. For cycling, it depends on what time of day you have available (during peak times you're going to be dodging twaddlers and putterers).

What days did you have in mind for riding? I can hook you up with a few friends from my cycling club, or hell, even meet you down there.

I can tell you why you're sick, I just can't write you an Rx

Riders still meet up. Just no police escort.

What days/time of day are you thinking you will ride?

The W&OD is super convenient, and like the others said it is great for running. IMO with the weather this time of year it wont be too crowded to enjoy riding you bike on it either. I would check out Hains Point, its a DC roadie/triathlete staple. The McArthur/Anglers loop out of Georgetown is pretty popular too. Bikenitic does a Tuesday hills ride at 6am if you are so inclined, I am usually not lol. Spokes, Etc. seems to have taken over the Tuesday night ride out of Arlington. Contes in Falls Church has a Saturday ride that rolls at 8am with a similar route as the Tuesday night ride.

Riding/Running the DC mall is a fun novelty that is cool to do once. The Mt Vernon Trail sucks to ride a bike on, unfortunately. I would check out the strava heat map also. https://www.strava.com/...491/38.87822/hot/all

You've got some good suggestions and pointers from others, including group ride pointers.

If you're riding solo, the W&OD is a good option as there's no chance of getting lost, just stay on the route.
And from Falls Church, I'd recommend riding westward - less traffic and longer stretches of continuous riding than if you headed eastward from Falls Church. Going west, you're probably 35 miles from the end/turn around point at Purcellville. So an out/back to the end from Falls Church is ~70miles.

Same with running - if you start at Vienna (next town over) and go westward from that point, the W&OD has a parallel bridle (dirt) trail that's great for running (vs. pavement). And Vienna has a tri shop/group, called The Machine that is right on the W&OD trail that might be worth checking out.
