Repaint a carbon fork
Hi guys,
I have a cervelo p5six fork to repaint?
I will bring it to an automotive paint shop as I don‘t trust my non-abilities.

I do I best strip the old colors down?

Cheers

I would ask the paint shop if they have any specific guidance, assuming that they have solid experience with painting composites of course.

If you're ok with the 1-3 grams of extra of paint weight, you might be able to leave the old paint on, but just wet sand it (to rough the finish and maybe remove clear coat, if it was applied) with some very fine grit sandpaper. That way you reduce the chance to zero of harming the structural carbon composite. At least that would be my approach unless some more experienced composite painters chime in.

Sand the paint a little to rough it up.

Buy a can of spray paint and go to it.

As mentioned above, just use some #400 or even #600 grit to lightly scuff the original paint and smooth out paint edges from stock color patterns or any graphics.

You are not gonna save them much time. Regardless, I bet they would sand again anyway. I know I would. Regardless, you probably want to leave some paint on. Paint will stick to paint. If you sand it down too much, they will have to primer first and that adds to the time and cost.

Thx, I will lightly sand it down, leaving the old paint on, then send it to the shop
