Stop beating dead horse with Dave Scott/mark Allen mentions. Last year's Kona was record setting with Lange and is more worth mentioning. Or what frodono did at roth

Yes, those are more current and impressive - but I am saying this relates to history

I am sure this record would be destroyed if done solo

Maybe. But folks wanting to do solo can do Swissman, Inferno Tri etc

John Stevens, pictured in your slideshow, is 3x champ at Casco Bay, so to see the gap between him and the winners makes a big statement about how fast that field was.
Perhaps it’s because this is a much more run-heavy event than Casco Bay. +60k of running? Sheesh

Actually in 85 and 86 it was Scott Tinley and Dave Scott the winners. Not sure what Herbert is insinuating happened those years that compare to this Swim/Run race, perhaps he can elaborate??

The field at Ötillö was super fast. Every division was significantly faster not just on the podium but even 10 or more places deep. The sport appears to be maturing very quickly as it gains in notoriety.
You are also correct about the course being much differnt from Casco Bay. Less swim focus and with a lot more technical running. Not to speak for him, but John also hurt his ankle heading into CBISR which limited his endurance training. CBISR is short enough to get sneak by without significant volume training whereas Ötillö is just too long for that to work.
