Reconditioned Kickr Core down to $630

https://www.wahoofitness.com/...rainer-reconditioned - Wahoo dropped $150 off today (not sure how long it goes on for) and has a 1 year warranty on it. Drops it slightly below the price of the leftover Cyclops Hammer (v1s units) which are sitting around $650 (although can still get 10% off at CT, so $585 + tax) - https://www.clevertraining.com/...direct-drive-trainer

Seems like these are some of the cheapest, no outstanding production/firmware issues of the direct drive trainers going into the winter months (and seems unlikely that even the November 20% CT training sale will get much of anything cheaper).

From looking at the newer offerings it doesn't seem like there is a ton of improvement in the direct drive trainer space with new generations. Everything is pretty quiet, power accuracy eventually gets sorted out as do other early production issues. Seems like the main motivation going forward would be if there's a new thru axel standard that can't be retrofitted to the existing trainers (and that doesn't seem likely in the super near term).

Is there anything that feels like it's missing from the latest crop of direct drive trainers?

Why get a refurbished unit when you can get a brand new Cycleops Hammer (1st gen) for $649 and with DCR 10% discount its down to $585

Second sentence of my post 🙂

Core seems to be quieter than the Hammer from videos & is a newer product so parts may be available for longer (although the H2 is basically the same as the v1 hammer it seems). That being said, I ordered the Hammer last week before this Wahoo price drop and don't plan on trying to swap.

I think DCR has pointed this out in his reviews is that most fans are louder than the trainer itself. I have an elite direto which is fairly quiet but not like the kickr core, neo, or others. But my fans are louder than the trainer.

Totally - in the initial DCR review the Hammer is considered quiet, but in follow on reviews it becomes the noisy one, if you ignore the fans. It feels like direct drive trainer technology has largely peaked. Accuracy, noise, compatibility, etc. all seem pretty comparable across various companies (and even in the high vs mid level e.g., kickr core vs non-core). There's the few special features (kickr's climb compatibility, neo's driving the wheel on downhills, etc.) but it feels largely like a lower the price point battle from here out. I guess this is why we're probably starting to see all the smart bikes - not as much room to grow with new trainers.

I'm happy with the direto. It's quiet enough. I could complain about the slight lag in resistance changes. But it does what I need it to do. lots of good trainers out there now for sure.
